1st post - New 2017 Cali ordered

We have a new RRS as our main vehicle and as much as we love our Cali, the driving experience of the Range Rover is far superior.

Really good spec.
On the verge of ordering mine and have a couple of suggestions, some of which others have mentioned...
* Full size alloy spare (can be fitted by recovery service and you can continue your holiday)
* High beam assist..I have this on my Audi TTs...automatically dips the high beam when you meet an oncoming car, then back to high beam automatically afterwards.....brilliant.
* Hill start assist...also have on my TTs...not only holds car on ascents and descents but stops the vehicle from crawling forward if you are in stop/start traffic and you don't have to have your foot on the brake...at £90 even more brilliant.
* 80litre fuel tank instead of standard 70 litre? At only £60 you may well be glad of it if you can't find a petrol station.
* Heavy duty anti roll bars...will help greatly when cornering and on roundabouts.

Enjoy.

Hi,

My Cali does have the standard 17" Devonports. It is the second T6 that I have have ordered. (rejected the 1st one due to non-swivelling seats... yeah, I know. Don't say it :))

On the 1st van that I ordered, I chose 18" matt finish Springfield alloy wheels & Heavy Duty Anti-Roll Bars. It was not an issue to order them together back in October 2015. I see you've gone for Toluca's. I do recall a discussion where 4Motion Cali's had to be ordered with the 'matt' finish Springfields & not the 'Shiny' Springfields. I know - this does sound a complete nonsense, but based on the above, I'm wondering if it's the 'style' of 18" alloy wheel that's preventing your selection of Heavy Duty Anti Roll Bars. Out of interest, can you ask your dealer to change the 18" Tolucas to 18" matt springfields on his configurator, just to see if it lets you select the Heavy Duty Anti Roll Bars?
In hindsight - it may have been my choice of the Heavy Duty Anti Roll Bars that forced the selection of matt 18" Springfields, instead of the shiny 18" Springfields, i.e. maybe the bars were entered 1st on the configurator. Pass.

Just for info - I keep in touch with the owner of my '1st' van. He would much rather have the standard 17" wheels & a real spare! If I remember right, when looking under his van, VW don't include the bracket that supports the spare. I could be wrong but I'm sure it wasn't there.
This pushed me back to the standard 17" Devonports plus a spare & I'm glad that I did.
Each to their own preference of course :thumb

Cheers & good luck
Just ordered for 2017 and I was a bit worried to see you had to reject one for not having swivelling seats. How did that happen and do you know how to avoid the issue - that would be a showstopper for me too?

Hi David,

As per Mike's link above, it's all in there (cheers Mike.)
If you do have any further questions, just reply to any of my posts in that thread, & I'll get back to you.

Cheers
Tom

According to the dealer I consulted the multi function leather steering wheel comes as standard with the 130mph adaptive cruise control but has to be ordered and paid for separately (around £360?) if you specify the 99mph cruise.

Hi, unless I missed it you missed an important option.....colour co-ordinated dashboard. You can only order in certain colours, Acapulco Blue Metallic is one of them. Can you wait 'til February??!!!!!!

Thanks. Well, I have to decide whether to swap our RR Evoque or RR Sport. The RRS is my dream car, but the RR Evoque would contribute a lot less towards the Cali! Head or Heart decision that I think will change several times between now and Cali delivery time.

Colour co-ordinated dashboard....hmmm the jury is definitely out on that one :) Dealer now advising end March for delivery....blimey.

That's a good point. There is also a normal multi function leather steering wheel or a sports multi function leather steering wheel. Specified the 'sports' but dealer didn't really know the difference. I won't be going +99MPH in the Cali :)

Thanks, will look into these. The HBA was rejected as I got some feedback from others saying it didn't react quickly enough in lots of situations - windy roads etc. HSA is in there as standard I think for uphill, just not Hill Decent. HD ARoll bars don't seem to be available with 18" wheels, according to dealer/VW configurator. Good point on more fuel and spare. Again a casualty of 18" wheels. :)

Thanks. You're right, this is a decision I swithered on. Mainly as I thought 17" may well be a better ride than 18", and as you say with 18" you lose the spare. Will check out the configurator again. But, I'm ashamed to say 18" bling appealed to me.

I also got a warning of the swivel seats issue. My dealer had mistakenly taken one from another dealer with 'comfort/height adjustable' seats for their rental fleet of Calis. Needless to say the person in the dealership who made this mistake is still sitting in the corner with a pointy hat on.

On a slightly sad point....I have now added a new Amazon 'wish list' called 'the cali list'. Collapsible kettle, non slip matting, pan set ideas, thing to cook toast on gas hob......this obsession could go on forever.

Did you order from Clark Commercials Dyce?

I'll tell you more on Wednesday......by then I will have placed my order (all being well)!

I didn't get any discount!

But jumped the queue....albeit getting dealer spec car.

Did you order from Clark Commercials Dyce?
A-ha! I see you've updated your details and location :thumb.

No. I tried to at the start, but they expressed zero enthusiasm & didn't get back to me with a price. They did the same to my workmate for a Caravelle. I've since adopted the 'eff them' attitude. I'm not their biggest fan & now I'm in the mood for a rant :).

I did go in there yesterday (I'm ashamed to say) but only to buy Adblue, as the dashboard warning came on. Van means a lot to me, and whilst not knocking other Adblue retailers, I'd rather play it safe and buy the stuff direct from VW. Surely they could manage that properly, right?? :talktothehand The saga continued...
I asked if there was a need for an adapter kit to put the Adblue in the tank, he shrugged his shoulders. I led him to a T6 on display and asked how I was supposed to hold this 10 litre tank of Adblue, with a wide nozzle, no means of transfer & safely pour it in to a smaller nozzle (that is receded inwards of the van & below the diesel filler nozzle) without peeing it down the side of the van. Again, I asked if they did an adapter, again the shoulders shrugged! I paid for the Adblue and walked out.

I have a VW Sharan that also takes Adblue. Specialist Cars VW Aberdeen were quick to tell me that I needed an adapter thingy to get it in to the Sharan without spelling it everywhere (when I first bought Adblue from them.) I didn't know if the same adapter would fit the Cali, hence why I asked Clark Commercials Dyce if I needed one for the van when buying the Adblue. Thankfully it did fit. Got all 10 litres in without spelling a drop. After filling the van, I noticed a picture of the adapter on the back of the empty Adblue container. Had I know it was there then I would have showed him that.

Maybe the guys in the back doing the servicing are decent, that I don't know.
The folk in the front are pleasant-enough, but just don't perform & are woefully short of basic knowledge. If you are considering them for your van, then have a read of the below. Personally I think that dealership should be relinquished of being allowed to sell Californias.

I have a tow bar fitting bike rack. This one http://www.roofbox.co.uk/gal/bkc/STRADA-DL-Slide-01Z.gif
Do folks think this works as good/better than the Cali back door rack?
Worth doing a search on things like this as the answer is often if not always there. Bike racks v tow ball mounted rack has been done to death and below is a link to one thread on the subject

https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/tow-bar-bike-rack-versus-tailgate-bike-rack.416/

I am waiting for my Cali and ordered it with a removable tow bar so I can then order a rack identical to yours the Atera Strada DL3.

It really comes down to personal preference and circumstances.
