20” Staggered Alloys Wheels / Tyres Setup

Hi all,

I’m looking to go 20” alloys on my 6.1 Cali Ocean, which wheel undecided, however I would like to go staggered setup. It seems 8.5 upfront and 10 at the rear based on some of the research I have done.

Could anyone advise on ET please as I want to avoid any rubbing at all cost as I’ll be lowering it to the point of closing the arch gap therefore suspension displacement needs to be considered in terms of avoiding rubbing.

Likely to be a 35 profile tyre unless advised otherwise.

You need a 9.5 on the rear with 45 offset all round.
There’s no way around it a 10j won’t fit....without rubbing on the sliding door panel
Basically Because the California has a thicker door panel with the table insert.
The t6 forum will tell you you can fit a 10j rear but on a cali it isn’t possible on a low van .I was lowered 70mm on the rear and with 9.5 wheels and a 275 35 tyre there was literally a mm of gap between the tyre and door panel.

9.5 rear with 70mm drop

Many thanks @Jay20cali , that gap is tight! I'll stick with a 8.5 Fs, 9..5 Rs

What wheels are those? Wolf Races? And what was the ride like on a 35 Profile tyre please?

There cades Thor load rated
The rear gap of the slider was a mm thick

The ride was good because b14s are the dogs noodles

If you went to 10j rears as apposed to 9.5 you would have half inch wider rims.,quarter inch either side so about 6mm more scrape on the slider the only way to avoid that is by going for a bigger et offset this means you would need at least a et 55 .
I doubt you would find someone like that .

As has always been the case, customising a Vw bus has
no boundaries, or at least many things are possible.

I wouldn't like to go to a Vw show just to see stock vehicles.

Appreciate it is not for everyone but I’ve made my California my own and sharing what mods I have done

Limo tints
Double solar panels
Gloss black front grill and lower insert
19” winter wheels for winter (20” for summer)
Lowered on coilovers -(rides better than OEM suspension)

Fairly new to this and appreciate the thread is quite old but I’ve got 10J’s on the rear and the door doesn’t scrape the back wheel

My tyres are also 275/40r20 so does this have any other knock on effects?

Need to check rims and tyres on a regular basis for cracks or splits as potholes tend to destroy wide rims and low profile tyres.

265 40 20 is better nearer the correct radius as the original size tyre..lots of people use 275 40s but there the wrong size tbh but do work is just change to a 265 or a 275 35 when there worn out

265 is too narrow for a 10" rim. Sidewall stretched and no rim protection.

I also mentioned or a 275 35 .
these will keep your speedo nearest correct and rolling radius nearer to factory .

Tyre width is tread/sidewall related not rim.

eg my 235 is 9.25inches but spare tyre has "fit to 7inch rim" on sidewall.

There is online rim and tyre matching info.

Just pointing out potential problems that aren't obvious until bought and fitted.

I’m aware of the my friend I was a tyre fitter in my early days,
The original question was will a 275 40 20 on a 10j rim have a knock on effect !
It may rub on the front if it’s lowered considerably.
but it will put your Speedo out...
more than the sizes I suggested !
just trying to be helpful as I have had many vans over the years inc many California’s too and from experience the tyres i suggest are a better size to use .275 40s are too big although a lot of people use them on un lowered vans to fill the arch more i suppose
