We have decide the time is right for us to purchase our first California and after driving the 150 and 204 I preferred the 204 but i have just be informed by a dealer the following:
I was just speaking to my colleague about the 204bhp engine and he advised me that Volkswagen have taken the 204bhp off the Californiaconfigurator on their website because they're discontinuing it with immediate effect. (as of last week)
Does anyone know why and should it be of any concern?
Any advise would be good for a first purchase, although I did have a T2 many many years ago.

Hi thanks for the reply but if you go onto the VW configurator which was updated i think yesterday the 204 TDI is no longer listed, I have just come of the phone to another dealer who has also just confirmed the fact but was not sure why!!
 
Yep been withdrawn, at least my dealer thought so. Happened to see him when I dropped mine in for a recall type fix.
As I believe they are basically the same lump I can't see any reason other than marketing. Sure I read a large petrol was being introduced. Basically 204 is the same with two turbos.
I prefer to think it will just make mine more unique, but then I am an optimist

It's all a bit of a mess at the moment.

Configurator was updated this week, as was the website and a new price list you can download.

The price list (dated 7th July 2017) has a full list of engines / gearbox / 2WD or 4Motion available, including the 205PS Diesel, but the configurator is far more limited in it's options.

However, this new price list does not match the prices shown on the configurator!! For example:

Both the Website & configurator says Ocean starts from £52,345 OTR (inc VAT). The price list shows the same vehicle, the 150PS Petrol, is listed as being at £51,733 OTR (inc VAT).

For this reason, I prefer the price shown on the price list pdf !! :)
 
....none of the dealers i've been speaking to have said it been discontinued. Just its not available to order at the mo.

They've not been told a reason why its not on the order system yet, but as it's still available to order on the standard transporter and very much an option in other markets, they think it will be back at some point.

I bloody hope so......as its a 204 DSG 4 motion i want and that's not a combination on the current list either as a petrol or 150 diesel.

I want the 204 DSG as well, but not the 4Motion (I think!). Part of me likes the idea of petrol, just because Diesel seems to be on the naughty step these days, but with no published figures of MPG / CO2 etc for a petrol Cali, it would be risky (at best) to order one without knowing this stuff, so just have to sit tight.

Well the 204 tsi isn't the greenest or the most economical kid on the block, and probably worse when fitted in a California.

Good point well made!

Did wonder about where the market demand will be in 4 years time, and will diesels still be desirable, but looking at those figures I can't see many opting for the petrol versions.

Have to say I like the idea of the 204 petrol as live in London and as you say diesel are on the naughty step but have been advised the euro 6 will be ok for a good few years to come!!
Any beside that I think we are going to go for a dealer demo 204 DSG but not sure re 4motion as on occasion we may need the extra seat!!

Maybe this thread should be moved to T6 discussion but suppose it crosses both.
 
VW have been messing about with the configurators for ages now. They have been fiddling with the Spanish one since the beginning of April. In Spain, all engine/gearbox/4 motion configurations are still available in 150cv & 204cv models in both Beach and Ocean variants. There is also a basic Beach model available with a 114cv 5 speed manual gearbox. No petrol versions are an option as yet in Spain. My local dealer has said that the full list of upgrades for the MY18 variants is not yet known. He has said that they are expecting some changes and enhancements to offset the price increase over here but so far VW are not giving details. They are probably waiting to see what they have a surplus of anything kicking around on left on the shelves that they want to get rid of! I get my Ocean later this year so I shall have to wait & see what I get. One difference I have noticed is that the dashboard on the new MY18 Beach (Spain) is different to the one shown in the current UK configurator which is showing the 2016/17 dashboard . The Spanish configurator also states that the beach now has 3 zone climatic aircon is now a standard item which was not the case in 2016/17. (Well not in Spain anyway). I don't know if any of the changes to the Spanish models for MY18 will apply to any of the UK variants.

Yes but that talks about CO2.
The issue with diesels is the particulates and it's not going to go away.
Personally I would be happy with slightly worse consumption as it's likely to be saved in future maintenance costs.
No the problem with modern diesels is the NO Emissions. DPF can trap and control the PM10 particles. I would not have described 31mpg as slightly worse fuel consumption compared to the published 43.5mpg for the 204 diesel.
 
Top pic is the optional comfort dash & lower pic is the standard one Chris, at least in a UK Beach - though mine doesn't have the silver panel around the heater dials.

The 2018 Beach (Spain) now comes with the 'comfort pack' as standard equipment. This was originally a 1500 euro option and includes the comfort dash, 6.33" touch screen, 3 zone climatic aircon the wider central console with drinks holders and a few other bits & bobs thrown in such as media connections etc. This is a substantial upgrade from the 2016/17 models where just about everything on a Beach was an option. Mind you, alloy wheels are still an optional extra on all Californias in Spain. Standard wheels are 17" steel. The 240v electric hook up (Beach) is also a costly option here. I suppose it's swings and roundabouts really. Up to the crash of the exchange rate, Californias in Spain were substantially cheaper than the equivalent UK model but the gap has now narrowed considerably.
 
Our dealer thought it was something to do with type approval re carrying passengers and would be reinstated as soon as the paperwork was rectified .

I accept it's a niche view, but my preference is for simpler & cheaper and I like the Beach being a bit lower-end without the fancy dash etc (though I do like the big sat nav screen in mine) and steel wheels suit it too IMO. I don't think I'd have swapped my wheels if it'd come with 17" steels instead of the 16" Clayton alloys that are standard in UK.

I have plumped for the Ocean because we intend to use the vehicle as a home from home whilst visiting relatives in the UK and the missus wants the extra comforts for extended trips. I have had to make compromises on some of the knobs bells & whistles though such as LED lights and fancy colour schemes. I need 4 motion with difflock as I live in the mountains and we have harsh winters. A towbar and steel wheels were essential, so I don't really miss the alloys option.
Everyone needs different things and it's nice to see what others show a preference for.
 
204 4M coming off availability could be as simple as VW have a large order for this platform and can't spare any for California conversion.

I hope that's the case as I'm a bit worried if I've got problems coming soon on mine.

My daughter is a sales executive (not vehicles) selling both in UK and an EU country - she sometimes has queries like this, it's usually connected with the difference between the GBP price and the conversion from the Euro price in some way that I didn't understand because I don't have a head for numbers!
