Activated charcoal canister option

Does anyone have any idea what this does and if it is worth having? It's only £18 on the options price list, but if it's something that needs replacing every six months it might be more trouble than it's worth.

The only other thread I can find about this doesn't really answer the question.

Sure its for filtering out smells

As it is so cheap it seems like a no-brainer, whatever it does. I guess I'm just suspicious that it is offered as an option because there is some downside (like extra servicing).

My dealer said it fits next a to the pollen filter in the air system. I have it and can still smell the muck that's been spread on the fields near me

I paid for this but the latest info on the website indicates that it is now standard.
