My usual response to tailgaters is to gently slow down a little or just ignore them and drive as normal.

Switch the sidelights On/Off.

Being tailgated makes me much more attentive to the cleanliness of my windscreen. They usually back off when there is a trail of second hand washer fluid dribbling onto their screen.
