California Depreciation

10 years ago I bought a 175 DSG with all the trimmings (leather seats, tinted glasses, lots of shiny bits etc) for £33000. Apparently some VW Sales Director had ordered it and changed his mind. I reckon I could get that back easily now!

You did blooming well - a little optimistic to get all that back but with the right miles and history presuming a 2008 then you should see maybe £27500 max in an actual private sale. I nearly shook hands on a facelift T5.1 2010 140 DSG at £30k last year...before it turned out to be a 180. :(

That was a very good deal you got!

My 2008 174 SE's basic OTR price was £37,500. I added some extras (awning, bike rack, cruise control), and some were already specified (metallic paint, privacy glass, parking sensors, Climatronic), as it was a dealer-ordered demonstrator. That brought the price up to £40,200, which I was able to negotiate back down to £37,000.

Euro then was at about 1.27 (down from 1.45-ish 12 months earlier - presumably VW's price changes already reflected this change by that point).

A couple of points strike me: was the SE less well-equipped than the current equivalent model? Additionally, the effect of inflation has to be taken into account - that £40,200 would be about £51,000 today, using the ONS RPI calculation.

Just asked WeBuyAnyCars to value our Cali. They offered £44,650, the base price for the van in 2016 was under £50 k before discount/options. Whilst acknowledging that we live in unusual times it is an astonishing situation that they can presumably see a profit in the market after paying such a sum.

£40,505 today for ours but we have worn it at 55k (2016) this week

I typed in my first 2016 Beach into WBAC the other day and it was £110 more than I sold it to them 3 years ago!
