Hi All, Happy to have joined the Cali Club at last! After 2 years of umm-ing and aah-ing I’ve finally taken the plunge with a shiny cherry red Cali Surf 2023 and I’m very happy and excited.
And currently relying on YouTube a lot to figure things out!

Looks great!

Nice to see a Surf here. The Surf is a bit of a mystery to me I have to say. It seems to have been introduced as a replacement for the Coast, that had disappeared from the lineup for while, but with a different name for some bizarre reason and a slightly different set of standard equipment as what the Coast used to have. But VW’s press releases about it were super vague about it and didn’t make it clear what the difference were between the old Coast and the new Surf.

And then VW canned the whole T6.1 California line just a few months after having started selling the Surf. The whole thing was just strange.

We have a surf. It’s an excellent choice.
Not a direct replacement for the coast. Not much difference from the ocean.
They probably just had some spare coast cupboards still and wanted to use them up.
If you have a choice don’t bother with an awning (IMHO). Adds wind noise and looks so much cleaner without

Thanks, yes the Surf is a mystery! Another reason I was drawn to it lol. It seems it has most things the ocean has except the awning and tinted glass. Both are easily rectified though so I didn’t let it stop me.
Someone told me that only 75 Surfs were registered last year?! No idea how they know that but it’s probably correct as Surf-specific info is hard to come by!

loving mine for sure! I think I’m going to wait and see if I need an awning. Definitely looks better without! I’ve seen these slide in awnings…wonder what consensus is on those?!..?

I wouldn’t be surprised. The Surf is one of those weird blips in the matrix that will be more rare than any actually limited edition anything.

I can’t help think that it t was a case of nobody telling the poor Product Manager who worked on the Surf trim that the whole T6.1 line was about get canned. And the CEO of VW Commercial discovering in the press that his own team had released a new California trim without telling him just when he was going to announced the end the T6.1. Hence the complete lack of info about that trim.

Welcome! And congratulations. Any interior shots you might share please? Especially of cupboard interiors and dash?

Absolutely love the colour !
Thank you so much!

Sounds about right lol, I’m always happy to be a glitch in the matrix

Hi. And welcome to the forum

I used to have a Thule awning on the side of my converted van, but got trashed twice in unexpected bad weather. They weigh huge amounts, increase wind noise and add to fuel consumption (as I found once it was removed). We now use a slide in canopy from Olpro

It takes a similar time to set up, lightweight, doesn't take much room stored inside when travelling, waterproof, largely windproof and, if it did get trashed by the weather, it is far cheaper to replace and less likely to damage the van in the process....

The only negative for me? The orange piping does not really go with my van and could be a real OCD challenge on your lovely red Cali ;-)

Welcome @CaliSurfGirl from a fellow Surf owner (although mine doesn't have the Surf logos...). Love the colour!

I do think the Surf was a way to use up parts before the end of the 6.1s. It's like an Ocean lite, but without the awning, shower, digital dash, ACC and may be a few other things, but I love it and don't regret the missing bits. I'll see if I miss an awning come the summer.

Welcome to the forum, and the exclusive (75?) Surf owners sub-section...

Hello from another Surf owner - absolutely love mine in Ascot Grey. It’s a parts bin for sure but looks the business and drives great!! We got an amazing deal and I’m delighted with the van.

thanks, you must be number 74 and I’m number 75 lol. I’m super happy with mine. It came with LEDs and I’ve got the windows tinted so not feeling like I’m lacking anything either will wait and see on the awning too.
What colour is yours? And what no surfboard sticker?! lol

Parts Bin but what a lovely parts bin eh?! I do love mine. Glad you got good value for money too. Can’t wait for summer!

Orange on red? Eek lol!! Thanks you so much for the info, that’s really helpful. I’m thinking I won’t use an awning often and the slide in ones are probably all I need. I do think vans look nicer without the cassette on the side.
I bought my first ever gas bottle today. 907, I hope it’s the right one. Will go on YouTube to see what on earth I’m supposed to do with it
