City Centre Camp Sites - within walking distance or bus ride.

Venice, Fusina camping.

Lovely location right by the lagoon with great views of the city (sometimes surreal as the odd gigantic container ship passes a few feet away in the deep water channel).

Hourly ferry that takes around 20 minutes to get into the heart of the city.

Didn't really use the site facilities too much as we spent most of our time in Venice, but showers etc all good. Obligatory Lidl nearby.

Don't be put off by the industrial neighbourhood leading up to it, as once you've entered the site it's all hidden & tranquil.

ACSI site at €17 during May.

Just got back from a 12 night round trip visiting Cambridge, York, Harrogate, The Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District. Thought I would share some of the sites we stayed on..

CAMBRIDGE. We stayed at the 'The Missing Sock' Caravan Club CL site http://www.themissingsock.co.uk/
This site has a single toilet with a decent shower and electric hook up, but does suffer from a bit of road noise at night. It's a 10 minute walk to the White Swan PH which serves reasonable meals. The bus (No 10) stops near the pub and takes you directly into Cambridge, about 20 minutes.

YORK. We stayed at Willow House caravan site, Wiggington Rd, Wiggington, York YO32 2RH. http://www.willowhouseyork.co.uk/ This is an adult only privately owned site which is open all year. The site was quiet and has excellent facilities including very large hard standing pitches. There is a farm shop and cafe on site serving a good breakfast etc. There is a bus stop immediately outside the site where you can catch the bus to the centre of York, takes about 15 minutes. There is also a nice CC CL on the same site, but this was fully booked during our visit.

HARROGATE. We stayed at Riply caravan park. http://www.ripleycaravanpark.com/ Nice site with good facilities especially for kids. Has a play park, football and volley ball fields and a duck pond. It's a 10 minute walk across a field to Ripley village where the Boars Head serves good food. The bus runs directly into the centre of Harrogate, takes about 15 minutes.

HAWES (Yorkshire Dales) CC site only a 10 minute walk to the town where there are lots of pubs and the Wensleydale Creamery where you can take a tour and stock up on your cheeses. Plenty of nice walks on the Pennine Way nearby.

CASTLETON (Peak District) CC site within a short walk of town with numerous pubs, shops and restaurants. Speedwell Cavern and the Blue John mines and Mam Tor are within easy walking distance of the site.

Very informative, brilliant thread

Cheltenham - Caravan Club site at the Cheltenham Racecourse. 1.5 mile walk to centre, also next to Park & Ride car park and bus stop.
Useful for the Cheltenham Festivals. They have 11 non-electric pitches which are rarely filled and they are right next to the race course with marvellous views. All Tarmarc pitches so NO awnings. NOT AVAILABLE on Race Days.

Skipton.
Tarn House Holiday Park (part of the Partingtons Group).
Mainly holiday lodges but they have 15 hard standing serviced pitches which are excellent. Brand new block with toilets and showers (water hot and free running - no buttons to keep pressing!), dish washing facilities, laundrette and a bar which serves food at the top of the drive.
30 mins downhill walk into Skipton but quite steep coming back.
Beware - use the directions on the web site and not the postcode to find it....

I've just read an update on the Bristol Caravan Club camp site. The CC have bought and old Police riding stable a mile away from the existing site and have applied to change it to the site for their Bristol Camp Site.

Plans for a new caravan site in Bristol rejected - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-37940715

By the sounds of that article especially the considering other options bit it sounds like more flats (on current site) which would be a shame.
That location at Bower Ashton would be great. Right on the edge of the city with views and good cycle/transport links.

I agree, lovely location. Shame it can't be left where it is now. Fairly rare to have a site so near to the middle of a town with a ferry, cycle path, bus and occasionally steam train links.
Access to the proposed site at the bottom of Rownham hill is a little difficult as people will come from the M5 and it is a fast section of road, even though it's not meant to be.
The risk of flooding is relatively easily resolved. The pitches near the chocolate factory at Keynsham have just been raised by a metre or so to remove them from the risk.

A great thread - thank you! It's always good to have site recommendations.

I would go with the main Keswick club site, it is right beside the rugby club. It has lovely vies across the lake . Level pitches throughout. Easy walk into Keswick town centre, if when you come out of the site you take a left and walk along to the lakeside. You can walk across some national trust land and head towards the Keswick theatre by the lake in around 5~10minutes.

Loads to do in Keswick I am sure the Christmas lights have been switched on now. An OK market on Saturdays . The site is within 5 minutes walk of booths supermarket, really fresh bread, if you get a booths card you can have a free coffee .. Just buy the scone..

You have also got to try the chips from the old keswickian in Keswick town square, great on a cold day.

Thanks Denzilgts. We love Keswick but we've never camped before and people have said that "the one by the lake is the one ou want". It was difficult to decide which was which from the club site descriptions. Just have to hope it doesn't rain heavily in the meantime...

For London, as well as those already mentioned I use Chertsey CC&C site. Rail station 15 minute walk away, half-decent hotel/ restaurant on the corner, delightful river walks on the doorstep, Hampton court just down the river and ever so camper van friendly in that they have an area with parking spots too short for pretty much anything else. Very easily reached three miles off the M25 close to M3 junction.

Just come back from 3 very pleasant nights there with Mr & Mrs Borris. Staff very friendly & helpful. Washrooms areas very warm and clean.
Made the most of the easy train access to Kew and spent a very enjoyable day there. Had to use the Cali to get to RHS Wisley & then to Brooklands the following day, both within ½ an hour drive. Lovely site. More photos on the view from my Cali thread.

This is the latest plan for the C&MH club site on the waterfront in Bristol. A lot of locals are very upset as it brings tourists to the city and provides a bit of variation to the eternal apartments being built here.
A public consultation starts next month, Feb 2020.

Chester has a temporary campsite on the racecourse every Easter for the food and drink’s festival.

Really well organised and presented festival and top celebrity chefs demoing. It’s on the racecourse so really close, short walk, to Chester centre with its great shops, restaurants, cafes, history and ambience.

You can camp for the weekend and there’s loos and showers, even EHU if you want to pay extra. Pay to camp and the festival’s free access all days/times.

It’s always on Easter weekend, so not the same date each year. If Easter’s early the weather can be awful (like a few year’s ago on March 13th, where they had to tow people on, let alone off). Last year the sun was blazing and it was like a very hot mid summer.

It’s good value for money and well worth it, even if you have to travel from afar. You can arrive on the Thursday and leave on the Tuesday, so a really good long holiday weekend with plenty to do and see besides the festival.

Chester also allows overnight stays on the Little Roodee car park all year. It is right beside the River Dee and 5min max walk to the city centre/ cathedral.

When we were last there Little Roodee was closed for refurb. Don’t know what they were doing with it. Do you know if it has overnight loos, James?
