Disabling the alarm on the Cali for ferry crossing

You probably are, if it works as you describe. That button is no longer there on more recent T6.1 (as per #156) and other changes over time from earlier California suggest that only the more recent T6.1 have this issue (potentially).
Like a lot of things, VW should have thought "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Am I one of the lucky ones that find this situation a complete non.issue?
I have a MY 2020 Cali Ocean 6.1 and all I do on a ferry, before locking it, is to press this button on the B pillar driver's side, then press once on the fob to lock it

The button still exists. It’s just a software button not a hardware one. This is a lot of chat around something where the answer has always been press the button. Hardware or software.

Perhaps. But #160 above questions this. My own experiences leave me unclear.

Yes maybe, but I’d be more confident if the button pictogram showed a tow truck hooking on to the van!

I can appreciate that, but they chose an interior alarm pictogram for both purposes.
Here's p75 of my manual that gave me all the confidence I needed

Interestingly that’s exactly what I do albeit digitally; disable interior monitoring and lock the vehicle using the key

That’s clear then! Wish we still had a switch - less easy to mess with than software systems.
