I found out today about the new EES system that is to be introduced from October 12. I wonder if this is news to anyone else?

The Times today reports that when we enter Europe/leave the UK, “we will be asked a series of questions to confirm (we) have proof of accommodation, sufficient funds for the trip, medical insurance and a return or onward ticket.”

More fun comes towards the end of next year when, “the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias) will begin. It will mean British passport holders without a visa or residency permit will need to apply for a €20 visa waiver before travelling to the EU. It will work in a similar way to the US Esta and be valid for three years.”

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and the older European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provide access to state-provided healthcare in the EU and Switzerland, as well as some other countries, for the same cost as a local resident. This includes emergency and medically necessary treatment, such as treatment for pre-existing conditions, routine maternity care, and certain treatments like oxygen therapy and kidney dialysis. However, they do not cover all healthcare costs and are not a replacement for travel insurance,

So with German citizenship would you take travel insurance every time you cross a border?

I have Portuguese residency that excludes me from the 90/180 days limit. I remain a U.K. tax payer with all NHS rights.

Prior to Brex!t as I owned a house out there and was there for about half of any year, I registered at the town hall, paid 15euro and got a 5 year certificate. After Brex!t was able to convert this into a bio metric card for 5 years and can renew as and when.

Registered with the Portuguese health service in case of emergency but keep all health matters with the UK.

All this only applies to Portugal and not rest of EU or Shengen area.

On arrival/exit from Portugal we show UK passports & PT residency cards, and our passports are NOT stamped.

The eu have been trying and failing to introduce EES for the last few years as a lot of places in the eu don't have the terminals or the space to include at the terminal. It will be a pain as everyone in your party has to access the terminal to scan in with a biometric ie get out the car scan passport, then scan biometrics. The border staff could then pull you over too. The EU now say it will be a phased introduction so not everyone will be scanned ( I guess that be some vehicles will be pulled over and some won't). For campervan travellers the border is at Dover so it's expected to cause delays as it will take longer to process vehicles. The tunnel already has the infrastructure in place. Other crossing will be done on the EU border side so who knows.

At airports it may cause delays, but it just will be another step in the border checks so should have less impact hopefully.

I guess this may be a pain for those going away for the October half-term when it's busier already. The system and checks are required to be fully introduced across all borders by 10 April 26.

There is talk of an app to at least prefill some details but there are no details of which borders are operatingit (apparently Dover wont be using it at the start) so keep an eye on your crossing bookings.

ETIAS is due to be introduced in late 26 but that can be accessed and filled in at home before travelling (similar to US ESTAS). This will cost 20 euros each and under 18s and over 70s are free.
