Ah, on top of the Schengen visa issues that I’d mentioned, I’d forgotten this 6 month passport validity issue that’s reported today in a Mirror Group News publication -

What’s new? Most countries have this qualification that Passports have at least 6 mths before expiry. Nothing new.

If you are into hill/mountain walking then I suggest you get suitable insurance to cover you for mountian rescue. Unlike the UK where it is free as it is carried out by volunteers most foreign countries charge, and quite heavily.
