External storage

Having booked the van in for a Gecko wheel carrier, I came across another company who fabricate these external boxes. I’d like some opinions on the aesthetic, Iv asked for more info, dimensions, load rating etc. The are ideally suited for items you don’t want in the van, BBQ, hose pipe, charcoal, walking boots etc.

is there anyone else considering external storage? What have you chosen?

I had a givi outback 110l on the back of my old joker, will probably fit it back on new van.
Very handy I use to carry an extra 907 bottle in mine, hiking tent and a few other bits.
I think they look cool too.

Yes I like the look of that Givi box too I've had their kit on motorcycles and the quality is good.
In my opinion the first box looks like an abomination

Haha to funny. There are a few like that floating around, but apart from appearance I’m worried about the load re the black boxes

Hope you have a big budget. Try Motorcraft adventures they might be able to replicate something similar

For me anything that blocks the rear windows is not good. Particularly on a 600 without the roof aircon they are badly needed for ventilation especially if beer / curry has been consumed.

Iv see these, would be my first choice but I believe they are in the US. I stand to be corrected.. they are in the region of about £4000 for the spare wheel carrier/ladder and the lock box combo. Id splurge if that’s available without import.

That actually looks really nice, I like that, how is it mounted, Do you have any more pictures?
If you click on my profile you should find some more pics I posted a while back, don’t have them on phone and box isn’t fitted to new van yet.
The box sits on the bottom bike rack bar and the top is bolted on using the bike arm bit that attaches to main frame.
On the joker you can only see out the drivers side rear so the box doesn’t restrict view.
Givi box is very well made and water tight.

What about having a wheel bracket on the other side but with a box on to get the same look

I think the pair is a good idea. Keeps it all looking the same. I would have felt a lot better though if there was a Brace between the vertices and horizontal tube. Looks like there might be a small load on the door skin.
I think it’s probably one of the reasons why the others are overpriced.

What ever I choose I’ll have to decide quick as the spare does not fit under the bed. To big. It’s in the living area now. Not ideal.

Looks like Mclarensportshomes fit Owl van gear.

I was chatting to the owner of this van at the weekend, he has a small petrol generator in the lower box. It uses the rear door bike rack rails (Thule) but also some additional fixings for extra strength. This GC looks amazing in the flesh

Looks a little like the first pic. I think they are nice and practical. It gives an overall beefier look.
Mine is booked in on the 18th for rye Gecko wheel carrier, it’s £940 plus installation. The same company have a multipurpose carrier for a couple boxes which is just over £1000 and the boxes are £730 for a large which is 80x60x50 HxWxD

Will send a few pics when finished.

Update,
Had the rear carrier fitted yesterday. Not the Gecko carrier though. I had to chase them to many times for fitting, literally had to beg then.
The same company cab fabricate a bespoke box carrier. I’ll end up with both the wheel carrier and box carrier at about the same price as just the Gecko carrier.

@T3Z-GB @Mr T Can one of you fine people let me know what company provided the wheel carrier? I like the fact it doesn’t cover the window. I don’t need ‘overland spec’. I can see Wheeliams UK make one but it looks (might not be) higher, and I would have to arrange powder coat, I would rather it was pre finished. Similarly the Storage rack on the right of the pictured vehicle?

I will need to find my feet but I mountainbike, snowboard and canoe and whilst there is obviously plenty of room inside for clothes, it may be shoes, helmets etc might be better outside as the ’garage/boot is smaller than my Cali beach. My canoe is inflatable and is [large]rucksack sized when deflated with split paddles. This would be an ideal way to carry it, either in a box or strapped.

Mountain bikes on a towball mounted rack then! And maybe check weight….

On my beach its bikes on the VW rack, Canoe on towball rack and of course spare wheel under.
