GPS Trackers... some things I've found researching.

Something else I learnt today.
For those that know it. Parked in the NT car park at the bottom of Brean Down. Armed the tracker and set the shock command.
It says on the signs that it's a 2 1/2 hour circular walk of Brean Down. Took us 30 minutes to get to the end when I got a shock alarm on my phone. Took less than 20 minutes to get back to the Cali which was fine. I doubt it had been touched and activation was down to the wind.
I have now programmed it to medium shock. Page 26 tells you how.

Which tracker do you have ?

I went to a village in Leicestershire on Friday to Saturday and parked the Cali on someone's drive. I set the Back2You Geofencing feature and waited for the confirmation text back, which didn't come. The owner of the drive is an IT wizard and said there was very limited GifGaf signal there.
I assumed that should it be stolen it would get to a place with a signal fairly soon and then arm itself. I moved it the following morning and cancelled the Geofencing command.
I've had a number of texts today from it giving it's position where I had parked it.

Does anyone know what is the best procedure in an area with limited signal.
Is it best to set the Geofencing whilst you have a signal and if you are parking in a location without a signal at least it is already armed? It will then, I assume, send texts with it's location as soon as it gets a signal again.

They are phones in effect so texts will queue up in and out. Isn't much you can do really but as soon as signal is there it should carry on where it left off.

The back2you is based on a tk104 platform and on my 104 there are settings for no gsm or no gps which should be on there but are usually off by default. They basically store the location it last had signal and send and update as soon as it does.

You could also send it a command to give a fix and it would report in as soon as it appears

I would send fix010s001n123456 where 123456 is your passcode

This would basically send you an update as soon as it gets a signal.

Worth saving this https://www.rewiresecurity.co.uk/usermanuals/104_Pro_gps_tracker_user_manual.pdf same commands as the back2you

That is really helpful Matt. Thank you very much. I think the cold affected the battery as well as it has spent half the day recharging despite being on 50% a few days ago.
Normally when there is limited signal, ie Snowdonia, I am in it, but this time I had to park it ½ a mile from where I was.
I'll read the manual carefully & I'll understand it better next time.

I don't know if the back2you has a phone app but i found that a generic app called GPSTrackerTK works well with mine and lets you automate some of the more complicated commands such as setting speed limits etc.

Does anyone know how to wire a tracker in that will shut off the engine if stolen. I assume that its not plug and play and needs an auto-electrician? I don't really want some Herbert pulling off panels unless they know what they are doing.

Yep it does thanks. I use the Apple one. Looks like the one you suggest may be good if you have android.

I'm not sure on the legality of the engine shut off feature in the UK tbh.

Thanks, Back2you seem to advertise it on their site, think i may need to do a bit more research.

It's not massively difficult from what I can gather, I do know people who have done it. if you want me to ask them how.
On our older vans we already had hidden kill switches (or several) so we never tried it ourselves.

I fitted kill switches on an old Mark1 Escort but with all the sensors and computers on a T6, I would probably not attempt it myself. I have no patience with such things anymore. It would be in pieces after the red mist faded ;-)

I was thinking of using the relay to inhibit the starter relay, therefore once activated and start stop kicks in, it won't start again. Therefore the vehicle would be stationary.
Also the stop command has 2 modes, under 20kmh and instantly.

The only thing to consider is situations like Simon found, where you have no signal and find yourself in a low signal area and can't reactivate the starter to move the vehicle.

Yes, so you would have to remove the power to the relay as it's normally closed..

I have a 'back2you' tracker in mine, despite what they say about battery life I have found it to be a week at most. They replaced my unit when I complained but the replacement is just the same. Other than that works well, can be set to tell you if your van has been moved, it sends text messages with link to Google maps to identify vans location.

When I rang Back2You he asked me how many of the extra settings I had used. I had set the GeoFencing and he thought it might not have properly cancelled. He asked the phone number of the device and the admin phone numbers I had set and then reset the device back to Factory settings. The implication being that the more extra features being used, the shorter the battery life.
You may have read that I had a problem setting the GeoFencing last weekend as I had parked in a no signal blackspot. I have just called Back2You again and he has reset the device. Might be worth giving them a call to reset and see if that helps. My battery lasts a month to 6 weeks.

The sleep settings really help extend battery life, worth checking they are enabled.

Do you switch it to sms mode too when not in active use? This seems to help too.

I've not used the different settings very much. It has a reasonable battery life and I put it on charge when up in Snowdonia once as month. Not sure what you mean by sms mode when not in active use. I leave it always on in the Cali so I can be warned if it moves.
Your instruction book is much better written than the one that comes with it, so I'll try to make my way through it soon.

Did you resolve your issue with the gate to your satisfaction?

Personally I'm not convinced about fitting kill switches and relay deactivation. I reckon car thieves nowadays will be pretty clued up and capable of bypassing things direct from the battery.
As for remote stopping the engine, just plain dangerous and as Matt has said most likley illegal for that reason. Certainly remote start is a nono so I guess remote stopping is as well.

Thanks I will try that.
