Hook on gear stick column

I was checking fuses and saw that there is a hook on the left of the gear stick colum, at shin level.
It looks like it is specifically there for something, but I can't work out what.
Any ideas??

Hmm,I did search hook thing, but not clip thing.
Mine looks slightly different.
So it seems nobody knows for sure what VW intentions wereIt sort of looks like the back is waiting to be popped out for some reason

Yep agreed, and don't pop the back out. With difficulty I managed to retrieve mine from inside the housing and stick it back on!

It is a T5 and UK thing only i guess , they got a diffrent dashboard outlay than us in European countries.
I can not find it my 2012 SE LHD either.....don't mis it either...
