My 08 Cali (20,000 miles) has developed a starting problem. Turning the key after the heat lamp goes out does nothing. Sometimes it takes 3 to 4 goes with the key before the engine fires up. It seems to be getting worse and typically its happening after the warrenty has expired. Any ideas?

The first port of call would be a diagnostic check at a dealer or suitably equipped independent garage. This should be a VW specialist.

Mine had a similar problem my local dealer didn't have a clue and thought i was making it up.
The 2nd dealer i tried diagnosed it straight away as a faulty starter motor. My cali was still under warranty at the time so no idea on cost though sorry

Thanks for the responses. The local VW Commercial dealer (Donnelly Bros, Enniskillen) has looked at the problem and it is indeed the starter motor. £300 for the replacement and fitting with a 30% rebate as a 'gesture' from VW warrenty dept. Every little helps I suppose. Out of interest mune is the first Califonia they have ever dealt with. They have never sold one yet! Folks around these parts seem to go for the RV type of MH.
