Hi
We will be getting our new Cali at the end of next month and so I spent quite a while on phone yesterday to my existing insurers (priviledge) and then when said they couldn't insure a Cali, (they insisted it was a Motor Caravan) they referred me to their sister co, (Direct Line) who quoted around 450. I am planning to call others as per advice, (comfort, NFU, Admiral etc) but my question relates to my No Claims which is currently attached to my Polo, which I intend to keep for short trips. Insurance on this is not pricey, inc full NCB at around £220 each year. However, not sure if a multi car policy will benefit me, and can only use the NCB on one vehicle leaving the other with none. Most folks would be able to split their two vehicles between partners, but my other half does not drive so both need to be in my name and of course will only be driving one at any given time. So, would i benefit from having the NCB on the Cali being that will be the higher premium? Already found out that if I reduce the mileage on my Polo from 10k to 4 that would add around a £100 to the cost! Not sure the best way forward here, and think I am going to have to call several insurers and spend ages going through each option with them.
thanks in advance for any advice and experience on this.

I was in a similar quandary as yourself, I left the no claims on the car and received a decent (40% ish) welcome discount from the Caravan and Motor Home insurer, they give a two year new for old guarantee and 365 day full European cover. I don't know how they treat commuting/work related cover though.

Sell the Polo and just use the Cali for all. Save on insurance, maintenance, tax etc

thanks will give them a call.

Scenic mirrored my full NCD from my main car. I cannot remember if they asked for proof.

New Insurance policies are normally heavily discounted and may well be pretty much the same as the quote with no claims discount.

No claims bonus is earned for one vehicle and relates to that vehicle only.

I managed to get a proof of no claims from a previous company car insurer which I needed to insure a third private car after losing use of the Company car. Having 2 private cars in the family didn't count towards a third no claims bonus.

The illogical case might be to insure the Cali using the existing Polo no claims and start a new policy on the Polo as well, this proving to be the cheapest option.

£450 is about what my full NCB cost is, does include full multi-trip European Breakdown & recovery service.

I went through this. insured my car bmw123D and they wanted 600 sheets. wouldn't accept NCD attached to the cali. so I asked about unattaching the NCD on the cali. the price went up by about 30 sheets. then attached the NCD to the BMW and got a quote for 280 sheets so I left the cali with zero NCD. i think it's because they classed the cali as a low risk for accidents etc

Admiral just mirrored my no claims bonus on a virtually new ocean and I think it was circa £250 ...,

AIB who advertise on this forum quoted me £699 I nearly fell of my chair.
£200 more than my usual company

We are with LV Multicar and pay £280 for the Cali and £220 for our Corsa, so £500 for the two. We’ve had 2 cars for a few years so just transferred one NCB over to the Cali.
Had a long telephone conversation with them to make sure that they understood the the Cali is a Camper van and to confirm that it’s fully covered including the kitchen and all original equipment.

thanks all for your info and experiences. v useful. will spend 'tomorrow' ringing round armed with all of this. especially good to know about intro discounts/ncb mirror offer. :thanks

thanks. Did LV ask if you have a tracker fitted before they would insure?

Comfort do not have no claims as such. Been with them for 4 years and no complaints - although the 48 hour rule is a pain. About to renew and probably going to go with the Caravan Club this time. One thing to consider is contents insurance. Specialist camper policies should include about £5,000. More regular car policies may be as low as £500.

So I rang my current insurer yesterday to ask a) how much more will cover on my polo be if i remove the NCB? and b) how much refund will i get on annual cost of £220 if i cancel this enabling me to move both vehicles to another insurer together.
I spoke to lovely guy at Privilege who assured me that they CAN insure the Cali and best way forward to would be to swop current policy to the Cali, taking the NCB with it, this would cost additional £69 to end of August. New policy then, on the Polo, without NC would be £230 (which is a tenner more than it was with the bonus). Sounds OK but didnt ask what the full year on the Cali would be.
I now understand that I will be able to build NC on both vehicles from now on if insured like this.
They confirmed they do not insure 'camper van contents' but qualified this by explaining this means personal belongings, and the Cali is covered for the built in camper area as it left factory.

I wonder if it is common practice for cali owners to want cover for contents, i.e. bedding, cooking and personal items. would this be covered within home contents insurance policy? (I dont have btw).

The other thing to check is accidents to the camping element of the vehicle, not from a car crash but camping accidents eg: Cooking fire, water damage from a water tank leak, roof damage from an unexpected gust of wind, awning damage , electrical fire from the mains charger etc: All very rare in practice but possibly expensive to repair.
