We have seen a few different insurance/ id cards available for when travelling in the rest of Europe (ASCI, C&CC etc). Are these geared towards caravanners worried about the damage they may cause or have things changed in the last few years and you are now expected to have insurance (over and above our standard cali insurance) or a trip in our Cali plus a tent?

Also, same question about ID - we cannot recall being asked of passports, or if we where, certainly never requested to leave them with the campsite. Is this a real problem in France? Not wanting to open a debate on ID in France in general - specifically whether campsites are asking for it.

Campsites in France and Spain like to keep something either your passport or ACSI card because you generally pay on departure, this ensures you actually pay. They also need your passport to register your details.

Travel Medical Insurance for your party is, I consider, a must. The Reciprocal medical agreements between the UK and European countries are useful but limited in scope. Been involved in too many Medical Repatriations, as the receiving medic at the UK hospital, to know the problems of not having Insurance can cause. If you are still within the Warranty period then you have vehicle cover for breakdowns etc: from VW Assisst. Your choice in the end but I've seen too many cases where people have elected to save a few pounds and ended up paying thousands for something unforeseen.

In Italy (Sardinia) they insist on a passport for registration as the police call in every day to collect their list of registrations, we tend to walk back to reception an hour later and collect them so as not to forget the next day especially if you paid upfront.

When we were with the CC many years ago we had their Camping Carnet and this was accepted in every country (about 18) that we visited - long time ago though. Joining the C & CC club today as insurance is with them - they offer a similar card that should do the trick at £5.50.

CC do the same.
