Would a dealer get a buyer for a van on their forecourt with a part-opened roof? I would know my dealership would fight my corner with VW if they would not authorise a repair. Lookers Glasgow needs to get its act together.

Have they sent a photo to VW or just said they have a van with a small gap on one side when the roof is closed do they know how large the gap/fault is at VW.

Unbelievably I have just got back from the garage who tell me that VW will not repair it under warranty as a gap is normal!!!
VW Customer Services here we come!

You must be joking.

Normal is for the roof to close flush, no gaps.

You are being fobbed off. Tell them to fob off and sort it.

The first (new 6.1) hired Cali Ocean we used in 2020 did exactly this on one occasion. The control panel was okay, but when driving only a couple of miles we were aware of a “wrong” sound. We raised the roof again, and lowered it, making sure the canvas was folding okay. The roof was fine then. Since that time we’ve put a bungee cord round the canvas. However, if you can’t get the roof fully down even when folding in the canvas, then it’s not acceptable, and whoever suggested it is should avoid chestnut roasting.

That gap is definitely not normal. Tell them to put a hose on and be prepared to pay for the water damage. I cannot believe how any reputable VW agency could possibly maintain its normal. We had one of the electronic struts fail while in Morroco. We took it to a VW agent in Spain and it was replaced under warranty no questions asked

We have a 2020 T6.1 Ovean. The electric Poptop will not fully close on the passenger side. Although the control unit says it is closed. We are away camping so having to drive like that. It seems secure (only about 2 cms) I hope it doesn’t rain!

Just been starting to fit the 'Brandrup' ISO-TOP roof liner, so went to put the roof down (wait 48 hrs for the velcro tape to bond) and had the same problem, roof a few cms higher on the passenger side. Tried a couple of times and it is OK now! Going to try again tomorrow and if the same problem then call local dealer see what they have to say. Wondered if you had resolved the problem or had any luck with VW?

I have had an issue with the roof sometimes (one in ten?) not closing fully on one side, quite like the picture in post #19. Some mechanical adjustment to the roof mechanism sorted it out. Took an experienced and specialised VW California mechanic less than ten minutes on the forecourt. I *think* it was the fine adjustment of the part the Germans call "Hexennase".

As an aside: the camping unit display does indeed show the roof as closed in this case. Since then, I always step up and double check the roof closure visually.

Send it fully up and down a few times. Also when up get your step ladders out, climb up and check nothing is up there and that the roof hooks haven't moved if they have moved you will see marks. As said check and double check the shutter and nothing is up there as for normal what is normal is vw dealers being thick as pigsh1t

I’d be asking if they will sort out the inevitable water damage when it’s driven in the rain!
Also ask what function the roof seal serves if it’s normal for it not to make contact with the roof.
Would try and speak to VW technical support directly. Customer support aren’t always technically on the ball!

Phone VW Assist. It is run by the AA, but insist on a VW Assist Technician and explain the roof won't go down properly and you are concerned it is Not safe to drive. They carry some clout with the Dealerships and can rapidly accelerate it for repair.

Certainly worth playing the safety card. I wouldn’t be happy driving it.

Find a nice quiet stretch of road later and drive as fast as you dare. See if the roof maintains its form. If it doesn’t, I would see the dealership in court……

It’s crazy! I would definitely strongly challenge them. Why not ask the opinion of a friendly VW master technician on the QT?
