I’m on hook up which rules out the leisure battery factor, although they’ve plenty of charge. Diesel tank half full, so no issues there. I’ve had it running for an hour, giving out heat as and when the thermostat switches on. Heat immediately works, but as that uses the last used temperature setting I’ve no idea at what level.I note it’s the first time you have used the heater.
is your fuel tank more than 1/4 full ?
Can you leave the heater running for a while, (30 minutes+)
I once had on issue with my diesel heater after the van fuel system was worked on, it turned out to be air in the fuel line to the heater, the control panel would cut out as the heater tried to go through its initial glow plug heat phase, due to the lack of constant supply of diesel (inbuilt protection of the system). once all the air had cleared from the system, it worked correctly.
the fact that you are getting some heat means that it should work, possibly the issues is with a software protection to prevent dry running of the heater.
It may not be this issue but it’s another thing to try before visiting a dealer.
edit: does the heat immediately button work ?
try putting the van on hook up , then try the heater ? Possibility the leisure bats are low ?
Or disconnect the starter bat for 15 minutes (you will get a load of warning lights come up afterwards, but a short drive will reset all warning lights )Maybe a system reboot might be worth a try @Hedley Wright ? I.e. Pull and replace fuses 5 to 8
Thanks - I’d already watched that one again to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Great explanatory video.Have a look at this there is a couple of videos one shows how the display should look and the various layouts and lights that should show up, if nothing else it should show you how the system should work (post #26)

Auxiliary Heating - T6.1
Hi Stuart, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t! If I can’t get heat continuously or heat immediately to work then the key fob usually does but only for under two hours and if I use it in the evening and again in the morning and don’t drive anywhere it won’t work the next evening. What...vwcaliforniaclub.com
Thank you. I might try that when I return home from my week away, don’t think I’ll risk screwing something else up while I’m away as I’m not mechanically gifted.Maybe a system reboot might be worth a try @Hedley Wright ? I.e. Pull and replace fuses 5 to 8
Are you in the uk (Away) ATM ?Thank you. I might try that when I return home from my week away, don’t think I’ll risk screwing something else up while I’m away as I’m not mechanically gifted.
Good thinking, I’ll give them a call in the morning. Are you in the uk (Away) ATM ?
if so call VW assist and get them to sort it out, that’s why you have VW assist, you may as well use it, if they can’t fix it they will at least confirm what the issue is
Let’s us know how you get on,Good thinking, I’ll give them a call in the morning.
Will do. As I’m getting heat out of it (no idea at what level it is running) I’m inclined to wait until I get home and can use the Carista to reset to defaults - just in case of warranty issues?Let’s us know how you get on,
remember to take a photo of the VW /AA patrol showing the fault codes on their lap top / tablet so you have a record and can share with others here
Vw assist / AA work on behalf of VW anything they do is as if VW did it, if nothing else you’ll have a good idea if it’s a simple fix or if it’s a dealer visit to sort out. Will do. For information - I called VW Assist but they declined to help as the heater isn’t something that affects the mobility of the vehicle. Told me to contact my service centre. VW assist will not even look at your setting if you have changed them in carista
if VW assist can fix it at site they will
What is the Control Panel voltage? Have you more than a 1/4 tank of diesel? The plot thickens. I just attempted to turn on the heater for the night (it has been working, albeit at an unknown level but I suspect level 1) and all of a sudden I get numbers between the arrows. Yay.
Unfortunately, although I can now choose my level for continuous heating the system thinks about it for a bit then quits, no heating icon. I’ve been through the fault finding checklist that VW Customer Care sent me (nothing new there) but it looks as if I’m in for a chilly night.
Thanks but I’ve checked all those back in the thread. What is the Control Panel voltage? Have you more than a 1/4 tank of diesel?
For Heat Immediately - look at the video at about 10 minutes in. Your initial issue of no heat level selectable is not covered, nor have I seen this myself. So that’s a bit of a mystery.Just so you’re aware, the Heat Immediately unfortunately has a max run time of 120 minutes ( I think that’s explained in the following video from California Time ). To reset the max run time, you’ll need to run the engine for a while.
To be fair, it’s the AA that respond, and while they’re good generalists, they know little or nothing about Californias from my experience. The typical fix would be to disconnect the starter battery and connect it after 2 minutes. You’ve been more helpful than VW Assist (“sorry sir but unless you can’t drive it or are in danger we can’t help”) or VW Customer Care who just sent me template email replies without ever referring directly to my missing numbers issue.
