Private Plate Purchased but do you get it ?

I imagine anything with VW on it hikes the price up a bit though
A little. I bought VW04 BED for a bit of fun. The same with “02 BED” is £499 incl transfer fee. Both allow use on the earliest of T5 Cali’s and would have a chance of resale to the whole VW camping community so may have easier resale if I choose to stop camping.

L8 Mum made me chuckle, it depends how much you want to spend and those type of plates would be very expensive I guess. Mine was a bog standard basic one, a lot of people won't see it (already tested on my parents who had no clue what it meant) which I'm ok with as the whole point of buying a private plate for me is so my brand new van is a little less obvious.
I got T6 OCE for £250, 99.9% of people have no idea what it relates to but it is only five figures to remember and the age of the vehicle is a mystery. Works for me.

Well I like it!
Just put VW08 EAN on my new 6.1.
Well actually put VW 08EAN on it, carrying the old ones in case plod stops me!
Rather than a waste of money, I see it as a way of making a van a bit more individual and personal. I wouldn't have considered sticking one on a car, but it felt different with a cali.
£100 fine for displaying illegal plates. Enforcement varies with County but getting stricter all over it seems.
DVLA condition of sale is to comply with the regs so in theory they could retract the number with no refund, in theory.

Snap. Same reasoning.

Good point, I'm rubbish at remembering my reg but paying £250 for it will probably help with that.
In 1970 I transferred a non dating registration from my wife's first car (a moggie traveller) to my car and have transferred it to every other car that I have acquired since. Consequently, I cannot remember the original registration of any of my cars since then.

Isn’t it odd that we often remember our very first number plate, but struggle with the newer ones? OKV420M, Mark 1 escort 1300GT.

Toast was the first thing that I saw.

I've never seen any point in private plates until recently.

Late in 2019 we collected our new Cali. We had picked the registration number from a list the dealer had available. It didn't matter which we went for but we ended up with ☆☆☆☆EDL. Unfortunately, within several days of getting it home three separate people had commented; Ah....EDL = English Defence League! So £250 was sent on it's way to the DVLA and we now have a private plate instead.

The moral of this story is to pay more attention if picking registration numbers.

Just out of idle curiosity... why would you think you'd be less likely to get ticketed if you had the legally-spaced plate version in the boot?
:Grin

I was assuming he’d swap them back and avoid getting fined again, but I shouldn’t really speculate on what other people might do/think.

Also a recent convert to the merits of a private plate here, for the age-concealment reasons other people have mentioned. That said, I absolutely loathe the “BO55...” and “B19...” thing that some people seem to love. Yes, I’m inconsistent.

Yes, very odd but true observation :)

My Mum, when she was a district nurse got a new lease car with a plate something along the lines of:

SA08 TAN

When she realised she quickly got it changed, not really suitable for a nurse visiting poorly people ! She should have kept it though, someone might have paid good money for it!

I remember a mate of mine bought a BSA C11 back in the early 60s. The reg was 3 letters and a single number..Today if it was transferable would be in the thousands.. The bike cost 2 quid..And that would be a good couple of thousand now..

Just purchased a private plate so of course the first thing to do is share it with you all. Just wanted something pretty basic and inconspicuous, found this for for £250, hoping someone will get it??

Personalised numbers are like marmite,
I purchased my initials with two numbers. Bit of fun and why not, cars all look the same. The best news is that they don’t go down in value, quite the opposite, so bit of a fun and probably get your money back if you ever sell. Some years ago the company I worked for owned Aud1 and VW1. I had the Audi number on my company car

The main reason for private plate is to make it less obvious it's a brand new van, otherwise I wouldn't bother

We disagree, we love to spot private plates. We’ve had 2 private plates for years that we transfer when purchasing new vehicles. They are like any other accessory, you like or don’t, you buy or don’t.

I've had this plate for 40 years. Was on a Ford Popular that I saved from a scrap yard and completely rebuilt complete with roof chop and 3.5 Rover V8 with autobox. It's been on several cars since and is now on my Cali.It has sentimental value.
