Hi,

I'm getting quotes at the moment for the new arrival expected late Feb - have had a very mixed bag of quotes!

This morning I spoke with a chap at Safeguard, after a little pushing I got the 10% discount (was originally only going to give 5%) and the quote looked good, but then I asked about leaving the vehicle unattended (airport parking, backpacking Etc.) as this seems like the major limitation with Comfort and he said 'oh no, you're not allowed to do that', but didn't really give me any details and didn't sound very sure.

He sent the quote through and I asked him to include the policy details document, but only got the 3 page policy information document and there's no mention of it in there, whereas it does state that you're not covered if you leave the keys in the van for example - surely it would be listed at the same time?

Can anyone shed any light? The underwriter is Highway, has anyone got the full policy or had this discussion with Safeguard?

With regards to Comfort, that was pointed out to me when I took the policy, but the advisor said that they just need advising if you intend on leaving it longer than 48hrs. That they would contact the underwriter (Aviva) and ask if they wanted additional cash for that period. So if its just a once a year thing, might still be an option.

Safeguard have sent me the policy wording now (not sure if a result of my post here or my original phone call). There's nothing in there about leaving the vehicle unattended so that's good (but contradicts my call), but there is an exclusion for cover of contents and valuables - "Accidental damage – other than damage caused as a result of a Road Traffic accident in your motorhome." which is a limitation, although it's still not clear-cut - awnings, cooking equipment Etc. are classed as 'fixtures and fittings', not contents, but the wording of the policy is still very much aimed at motor insurance, not camping insurance. Accidents are only ever referred to in the context of traffic accidents. Fire cover is only mentioned on the opening page where it says it's covered - no detail at all.

The 3 page policy information mentions "Accidental and Malicious damage, Fire..." but the only time those terms are used in the full policy wording are when referring to reasons why Safeguard may be unable to meet expected service levels (i.e. there's a riot or flood and they're really busy).

More questions than answers really. Phoning AIB today, will see where I get.

Personally I didn’t get anywhere with Safeguard. I have had a couple of conversations and a quote from AIB and they seem to have a good understanding of campervans and how they are used. 3 years new for old caught my attention. Interestingly, the quote offered also came from Aviva.

Suggest you call LV before deciding

My policy is about to run out with AIB. No issue with them. However, contacted A Plan Specialist Vehicles in Thatcham and they have given be an excellent quotation with their specialist campervan insurance provider. Now debating AIB renewal or A Plan? Had a really competitive quote from LV, too good to be true really. The more I looked into it the more convinced I have become that this is a simple van insurance, not campervan. I then asked LV for a van insurance (not campervan) the result was exactly the same as the campervan quotation. If going LV make sure you do your research.

Hi BigJohn, sorry to hear you've been left with a number of questions unanswered when it comes to the policy we offer. I can absolutely confirm that the only condition in our policy wording which refers to leaving your vehicle unattended is if you were to leave the vehicle unattended in a foreign country, whilst you return to the UK.
It sounds like you have a number of specific questions as to the level of cover provided, which I'd like to confirm and clarify with you. Please feel free to send me a message by private conversation on the forums and I'd be happy to arrange a call to discuss any details.

On that note, in response to some of the other queries I've seen raised here by VW California Club members, please do feel free to reach out to me by phone or private conversation. If I'm available I'd be happy to answer any queries or look at providing a quote. If I'm not available you're always welcome to leave a message with me here on the forums so I can arrange a time in advance to give you a call.

Hi. All.
Any recommendations for insurance. Mine is due to go up from £870 to £1380 in December so I’m looking around for an alternative. Currently with Safeguard for our 2020 Ocean 4wd.
Any suggestions for a cheaper insurer ?

That’s insane! I’d give all the reputable Motorhome insurers and brokers a call. Thinking about AIB, Comfort, NFU, CAMC, A Plan. The bad news is that a few use the same insurers policy from Aviva, so the results might not differ much.
