Hiya. I’m after some advice, tips etc! On Saturday we are catching the overnight ferry from Santander to the UK. We have booked a cabin and we are 2 adults and 2 children.

Does anyone have any advice or tips about what to pack, take on board, entertainment etc for the trip?

Thank you so much!!

All the usual overnight stuff. Toiletries, change of clothing, phones/iPads and chargers, books/kindle to read, money - just relax and enjoy

If you've booked the "dearer" ferry it has a cinema on board. If not, take something to entertain the kids!

Good point. If you’re on the ferry called MV Etretat that runs the no frills weekend service, it has VERY very basic facilities as all the space is dedicated to its huge capacity for vehicles (2300 lane meters). Hence there are not many places to sit and relax or wander around.

I've done both. My pikey mate and his Mrs wouldn't pay the extra sheckles for the more expensive boat. Even he said he wished he's paid the extra! The MV Etretat is proper Happy Shopper!

Power Sockets on ferry are continental. Looks like you may be on Cap Finistere so link gives you info

We always have lunch on upper deck , there is a swimming pool up there too. Have a good trip.

Tàke your binoculars and spend time on the way out looking for Curviers beaked whales and dolphins!

We just found out a couple of weeks ago that the Santander to Portsmouth ferry is now the Santander to Plymouth route. I think its a cost cutting exercise and they said that its running on 3 engines not the usual 4.

To us it doesnt matter as we are going to south Wales and the journey is Exactly the same. Its going to be a surprise for people who have booked a Hotel Portsmouth and cant cancel it.. We used to do that when we toured on a motorbike.

Result of problems they had with the ferry earlier in the year, not cost cutting but operational problem. Pity as we too could have used a that ferry to Portsmouth later in the year but it looks like the Pont Aven is not on it old routes for some of the winter too. However we can book on the Cap Finistere.

MMMMM yes Thats what I was told but not until they were ready to take my money. I only found out because I was looking for a better cabin to the one we booked only to find out the Santander to Portsmouth route didnt exist any longer. Only when I actually phoned them I was told about the 3 engines and Plymouth route.... Luckily it looks like people had cancelled so we could upgrade to something with a window and kettle.......

That does not sound fun. Plymouth would be useless for us, we usually do the Portsmouth to Bilbao route so when we came back from Spain we were not effected by one ship being out of service. We have been from Santander and will on our trip next time but on the other ship, I had to study the timetables a bit more than normal for our next booking. The other ship is still sailing but on Fridays in August so no use to some people. Hope you enjoy your better cabin and your trip back.

Yes thanks for that Barbara. We come back on the 30th September and enjoy that crossing. But for some people Plymouth is a bridge too far.....

True, I was on the Pont Aven when a fire broke out in the early hours of April 29th, in the middle of Biscay. All passengers into life jackets, helicopters and a ship from the French Navy in attendance. Due to the need for repair facilities the ferry turned round and was escorted up to Brest, where we were decanted onto the quay and left to make our own way. Brittany Ferries were a nightmare to deal with and getting money out of them was very difficult.

Last month I came back to Plymouth on the Pont Aven, on 3 engines. Later this year they are replacing the 4th engine.

The trouble is there is Brittany Ferries or there is nothing. Since P&O stopped Brittany Ferries can do anything they like.... Its time someone else did that route....

We took the Pont Aven a couple of years ago and it was brilliant. Booked again for May this year and the afternoon before leaving I checked web site only to find Brittany Ferries had cancelled all crossings because of a fault. Nightmare to try and rearrange an entire holiday in less than 24 hours. BF excuse for not telling me was that they were notifying people in order of travel date. Subsequently they issued a voucher for half the outward crossing but declined to do the same for the return on the basis that I cancelled it even though at the time there was no chance of th crossing running. Big hit to my confidence in using BF. Mollie

Love overnight ferries! Always a great way to start and end a holiday and we always book a cabin. Often take a cold box of goodies to eat and a bottle of bubbly, although the onboard restaurants are pretty good. We have also taken a little kettle for a cuppa in the cabin. Good to download some movies onto an iPad but you have onboard movies as an option. We saw 100+ dolphins from the Santander ferry in the Bay of Biscay. Bon voyage!

Hi Emma, we are as I type on the Portsmouth to Santander Brittany ferry. I would defo remember a euro plug as there are no uk ones and a charger or battery pack. I remembered my hairdryer and straightener too. Our friends forgot their Euro plugs which was a pain for them. If you want a bit more morning privacy and you have a plug in kettle/coffee machine bring it on board, I saw someone else with one and wished I had thought of that. We’ve had a great time on board playing cards with friends and entertainment was good - up to date films, quizzes, etc. Rooms were fab too! Great start to our Cali adventure

But if you want real Luxury then book a Commodore Cabin. They are huge with a balcony, About £260 ish but wow. Only thing is you need to book at least a year in advance.
