screech and rumble when pulling away

Good evening all,
Well I have an update for you regarding my Screech and Rumble. !!
Despite the fact that I had made an appointment with my nearest Van Centre ! 22nd July earliest thay could fit me in !! I took my Cali to my VW Specialist Paul Bailey. We got her up on his 4post ramp and with handbrake hard on and in drive we all peared underneath. There was one hell of a racket going on and Brad Bailey noticed the power steering belt and tensioner were flapping about alarmingly. Stop engine he called out. Ok so the long & short is that the Alternator Pully ( same drive belt ) had partially seized. This is a clutch type pully . This was causing the belt to distort and the tensioner to move in and out alarmingly and all making a right noise. Of course when accelerating and putting more tork on the belt and tensioner made the belt Screech and the tortioner Rumble.
So Alternator out / old pully off and new pully on / refit everything !! Test all quiet and peaceful !! £101 quid and one happy PB.
VW wanted £85 plus VAT just to look !!
Many thanks to all who advised me over the weekend it was much appreciated. I do hope this might assist someone else at some time.
Beware the Clutch Alternator Pully
Off to Sunny Dorset in September to Celebrate.
Cheers

Thank you for letting us know the outcome. Not everyone does unfortunately.

I have started to get and loud screech when reversing, bit like a grinding noise.

Dear All– My first contribution to the group!– and I also need to work on my avatar no doubt– 2015 T5 California Ocean manual–I think I have the same problem of "screech"–evident in reversing (only) notable with right-hand lock– but probably not exclusively - sounds like squeeling noise of tyres in multi-storey car park (only time I ever experience same sound in another vehicle - going forward) - VW main agents sprayed silicon onto CV housing– said "it may solve the problem, but also that it might come back, and this is quite normal "- charged me £75–problem has not gone away and I cannot see that this noise as normal in anyway? Any contributions most welcome - David

There was a Service recall regarding one of the belt tensioners. Ask Dealer? My late 2014 had this done.

Hi David

Firstly, ask for your £75 pounds back, because they offered poor advice and failed to investigate and fix the issue properly. They simply cannot make a charge for workshop time if they fail to investigate properly

I can assure you the noise is not Normal

Did you buy the vehicle from the stealer where you were charged £75 ?

Spraying lubricant onto the CV housing
The CV joint should be covered by a rubber boot, if the boot is split, the gator needs replacing and re greasing of the cv joint. If the rubber gator is intact, the lubrications applied by the dealer will do absolutely nothing, if the gator is split they should have informed you and advised the costs to replace the gator.

May I suggest a call to t(e dealer and ask to speak to the CAli master tech, to ascertain what they did and why ? The next visit to investigate properly should be free of charge

Here is a diagram showing a typical set up on a front wheel drive vehicle, I hope this explains why spraying lubrication onto the CV joint is nonsense, a CV joint will wear over time and if it develops a problem should be changed, failure of the gator ( boot) is a major contributing factor to failure of a CV joint
