The zip went on my sleeping bag and I have to replace it. We go camping every month of the year. Is a 500 going to be too hot? Is a 400 better or will I need one for summer and one for winter?

Check out there temperature rating of each bag to see what they are. Could always put a silk liner inside for winter use.

Weight of Bedding is such a personal preference...can't see how anyone can give advice really. It's try and see I think.

As you have a heater in your California I would go for a Summer weight bag and use the heater when required. Thats what I do.

We found our 3 season bags too hot so now take two duvets (thin and thick) for all eventualities . It means you can move from sunshine to mountain holiday mode and still be snug. They both fit into one of those big clear Ikea storage bags.
