Thought it might be of interest to relate a bit of good news for once. Stupidly I managed to completely smash the nearside wing mirror on a gatepost in our drive. With trepidation enquired of VW likely cost and told in region of£700. Checked with local garage I use who said last one they did cost £450. Had a good look at posts on the forum and have done the job myself. Parts required were: outer frame, mirror glass and the metal mounting bracket. Total cost £60! Fortunately the painted mirror cap was undamaged and the swinging wreckage had not damaged any paintwork. I used plastic tyre bike tyre levers to remove the cap(s) and a cable tie tip found on the web for compressing the spring holding the bracket in place. So, a big thank you to the forum for great info!
