There is however quite a bit of space under the wooden slats on the upper roof. Its a bit of a pain getting anything back out from under there.

When we travelled around Europe we stashed important documents there. When we crossed the border between Bulgaria and Romania (both non Schengen) we were asked for the “car passport”. To get the registration document out we had to open the hatch, raise the roof, and rummage around under the bed slats. It amused the border guards and annoyed the truck driver behind with his two trailers loaded with freshly felled pine trunks.
