Evening,

I’m looking for some advice please?

My VW 2016 T6 Cali Ocean’s soft close tailgate isn’t working anymore. The boot locks but it no longer soft closes. I’d like to rule something out as simple as a fuse before I start getting in to more potentially advanced faults. Can anyone tell me specifically where this fuse is located as there’s 3 x fuse boxes? Any idea of fuse number also and how to access?

And if it isn’t the fuse once replaced, if anybody has had this problem before and what helped them to resolve?

Many thanks
Steve

Hi
Thanks for your prompt response and guiding me to resources I have taken a look on there and it’s pointing me to possibly 2 fuses a 15a. Or a 20a. I will have a look tomorrow and see if either need replacing thanks for your help

Will you also keep us posted, please? Interested to know if you find the issue and for future reference.

Are you sure it’s the fuse. My experience of the soft close on the side door is it fails sometimes because the electrical contacts that make to instruct the motor get dirty. I can’t recall what triggers the boot though.

Hi Thanks for your help regarding the soft close tailgate I do believe my pal already looked at the contacts I'm waiting for him to come and look again at the fuses its so difficult just to try to locate the correct fuse and that's even after looking at some of the fuse box diagrams in the resources section my pal works a lot of the time so I may have to wait a day or 2 for him to have another go at the mend but I will keep all informed if he manages to fix it fingers crossed

I just went out and checked my T6 and I can’t find equivalent contacts on the boot that are used on the sliding door so I guess boot closing is detected by the latch. Some wd40 on the boot mechanism and a few operations might not go amiss if you haven’t already.

My soft close boot has stopped working. I asked the VW Van Centre to check it out when it last went in for a service and was told that they couldn’t find the problem. In order to investigate further they would need to remove the kitchen unit as that’s where the soft close motor is located. Sounded like a very expensive operation so told them to forget it. Anyone else experienced similar. My van is a T5 Cali 2011.

They don't want the work. Why they lie I'll never know.
Part 23 is the Soft close motor. Nowhere near the kitchen.

That's very useful Welshy, many thanks for this. I'll see if the local garage can sort it.

HI everyone
just an update on my soft close tailgate t 6 California Ocean 2016 my pal checked fuses they're fine he then took the plastic cover off where the soft close operation is based the motor that operates the soft close is located in there and this was wet and had sand around it . He had previously mended the boot lock as that didn't work properly as it would open itself then it wouldn't undo that's a horrific job to strip down and get to but he managed by exchanging the motor was £64 from VW van parts direct

[VW Transporter 2016-Present Rear Tailgate Pushbutton ( Without Hole for Key Barrell )

and that's working fine now . Getting back to the soft close he tested the motor to it that's located underneath the plastic of where you see the protruding soft close latch and that's working ok so the only thing left to test now he says is another component that also works the soft close and he informs me that's based somewhere above the rear passenger side wheel arch and I suppose like most jobs on my cali this will also be very difficult to access . I will keep all informed this may take some time still as my pals a working lad so he only ever has limited time to look . In the meantime if anyone else has any help for me with this I would appreciate it . My take on all of this with both the soft close and the tailgate lock is that they also seem a very poor design as both motors had water in them.

Hi
Ive had similar problems. The soft close is not, NOT, anywhere neat the kitchen units . I replaced the soft close mechanism but still no joy, so the fault is in the wiring/ fuses which looks as though the kitchen units would need to be removed so I put in a normal latch but the door still does not look as though it tis fully shut. Finding the fuses would be useful!

Check out the Resources section for fuse diagrams. You need VIP membership for this.

Hi Aclowes my pal still hasn't got round to fully mending the soft close on my cali as he really struggles to get time to come and look and every job on my cali seems so awkward and long drawn out .my cali is an ocean 2016 model we checked the fuses for the soft close they are located in a very awkward place on my van you have to pull out /undo the drinks holder that's located beneath the gear shifter then that particular fuse is located in there he says its fuse 44. 20a alarm horn along with another few things that the 20a fuse controls like I already stated in my previous post the fuse is fine and the motor works fine. and the actual soft close motor is where I already stated it was but its the soft close controller /supplier that he will next look at my pal says there's some sort of control unit that in turn works/signals the soft close motor and that is located somewhere above the rear wheel arch his next job will be to check that but it may be difficult to get to I will keep all informed with progress regarding my soft close issue we have now eliminated everything else apart from this last bit of the puzzle I hope this may be of some help to you

my boot did not shut properly and would lock/unlock itself this was a separate issue and my pal changed the boot lock for a new one so that's working fine now with the fully locking/unlocking side of things but on my cali due to the outdoor seat storage within the boot lid actually getting to that boot lock and doing the repair yourself is very difficult and would cost £100s from VW doing the job
