Starlink - Global internet

The website mentions a USB-C accessory coming soon so that probably means we can power it from a 12v socket using a proper power adapter.
This is now available. Just ordered one. £27 for a 5m usb-c to dishy cable.

Isn’t that the 20v one?
Not sure what you mean.
This new usb-c cable needs a 100w usb-c pd supply, I assume they’ve made the actual cable thicker perhaps to reduce the voltage drop. So it therefore will run on 12v.

I know zero about electricity but it said 20v /5amp on the one I sawIMG_5705.png

So looks like i'm steering away from Starlink, sadly.... :(

Thanks to @Jimmylondon07, i've nabbed one of these for £342 https://amzn.to/4e6Vedl (30% off) paired with a 500gb p/m for 24 months at £89 (31% off) (https://amzn.to/4e43Cub) . The unit is £60 cheaper than the Starlink dish and the monthly subscription equates to around £3.30 per month versus £50 for the Starlink.

I REALLY want a Starlink - but on the basis that I can plug and play this straight into the GC, have far more data/streaming and at a fraction (literally) of the price and have it whilst moving without any faff (skylights, etc), I cant help but prefer it as an option right now. The only two downsides that I currently see are that there will be places where I dont get amazing signal, and when we do Europe trips, we'll need to consider other data packages.

Yeah that 3 sim is a bargain at the moment! £89 for 26 months internet capped at 500GB per month. @Jimmylondon07 always has an eye for a bargain. :thumb
I have the EE sim from Scancom and it works great.

I ordered the Chinese knock off from Amazon, I wish I had waited! Still if it works I’ve saved myself a tenner…

I had that router in my basket for ages before pulling the trigger on the starlink.
I too have one of those sims in my netgear nighthawk 4G router which I will continue to run.

I don’t know enough about it to not be scared it pulls 130w as guide says max 120w !
Watts is the unit of power and is roughly equivalent to Amps multiplied by Voltage.

If you require 120 Watts at 12 volts that is 1 Amp.

However from an electronic view point pulling (drawing) maximum wattage means the life of the device will be shortened due to running flat out, same as driving car at maximum revs until it goes bang.

Ideally for maximum reliability if you require 120W continuous load you should be looking for a device with 180W maximum output. For £14 the Amazon product rated at 130w should work, the starlink will draw what it needs.

Thanks, when I said the brochure said 120 watt max I meant the VW California brochure on its 12 v system but I suppose the Starlink won’t draw anything near that and I just have to be careful not to plug anything else into the Anker button to exceed the 120w limit?IMG_5706.jpeg

His math is wrong. You can draw 10 Amps at 12v for 120 watts.

The Starlink cable over usb-c will draw max 20v at 5 Amps, or 100 Watts. So you are fine but to be safe only have the Starlink connected via a single socket (don’t use any other USB sockets on the adapter)

The starlink mini will draw about 60w max. In normal usage I’m seeing around 30w.

All setup. Also nabbed a 12v cable (https://amzn.to/4gbh8xZ) so we can power off the EcoFlow's isolated 12v socket, as we use the 3 pin sockets as an EHU alternative (all wired internally, so just powers on remotely when we want). And should last around 64~ hours.

Stuck on using some basic silicone tape (https://amzn.to/4dOgPrA)

Overall, very chuffed - fibre speeds when in 5G reception areas for £3.30 for the next two years. . The only negative is that Apple CarPlay runs off wifi, and cant connect to two wifis at once ofcourse. But the workaround is to just connect the phone via USB-C.

Used my mini at the festivla this weeked - great performance, custom cable worked perfectly with the ecoflow but not with the rear 12v socket in the van. If I had just turned it on while we were awake at the van I would have had plenty of power but I was testing the longevity and it made it from noon Thursday to Saturday early hours.

Can I ask what adaptor you were using in the rear 12v socket and did you try the one in the kitchen (if you have an Ocean)?

Have you tired the ”sleep” mode? You can set a time for it to be inactive, so it drops the connection and reduces power consumption a bit.

I made one - 3M and works fine on the ecoflow but did not try in the kitchen socket (which may work if perhaps the wiring to it is short enough to not cause voltage loss which is what I assume was the problem with the rear) I will re test both of these later though in the name of science (and I have a multimeter at home)
