Couldn’t find a description of the stop function - is that something that locks open?

I would assume so. I believe the original gas struts on current Calis have also this function. If you open the (loaded) tailgate, you have to push it all the way up otherwise it tends to close. If you push it up the very last two centimeters, it suddenly holds the weight securely while 1-2 cm before that it didn‘t at all...
