I have read this thread with interest http://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/california-styling.8482/

Just wondering if anyone can recommend any relatively small changes I can make to styling to give the van a little more visual appeal or some accents. I love it dearly but in Natural Grey its easy to miss that its not just a converted panel :).

I was thinking front fogs, is this a relatively easy mod? The moulded plastic where they should be irritates me everytime I look at them.

I was also thinking side rails, can't decide if black or silver for the grey van. Anyone have them installed?

Any other relatively low disruption additions that could give the van a little more interest (ok less bland).

Can post photos again.

Loving those side rails, really nice! I was pondering a less shiny set. Are they easy to keep in good condition? :)

I can not decide yet. I would like to have some new wheels (the easiest way to upgrade/improve my Cali): My GF prefer the black ones, I'm more shiny (both are Platin p69):

However there are alot of wheel-threads....

Hi MattBW. These are genuine VW side bars. No problems keeping them clean. Beware that some 3rd party side bars if fitted stop you using the normal jacking points.

I like the way the california is understated there are lots of T5's out there with 20 inch wheels and every accessory available on them. Those in the know will spot the difference, I would like a set of dakars for my california though

There are loads of subtle tweaks you can make to change the image. Attached is a photo of how we brought ours and how it looks now. We have changed the wheels for the sportline Matt black 18's, black side bars, sportline front valance, LED DRL's, sportline 30mm lowering springs, genuine front fog lights, front mud flaps and a VW bike rack which I painted satin black. Admittedly not to everyone liking but certainly the tweaks we wanted to finish it off.

I think the VW sportline front spoiler really sets off the front end of the Cali.

Funny you should mention that, I saw one on a van last weekend at the Eastnor Castle VW and it looks stunning. Definitely the next purchase

Caravelle headlights are a good upgrade for sensible money as normally beaches only get commercial lamps.
Sportline and ABT splitters are also quality parts.
A much overlooked upgrade as suspension. Bilstine make the suspension for VW t5's for vw. They also do a b12 performance kit. This uses the same springs as the sportline van (made by eibach) and uprated struts with the front struts shortened by 10mm. These remove body roll without sacrificing comfort and can be fitted without warranty issues if you notify vw in advance. I have them on my van and everyone who drives it is blown away by them.
I'll post a pic of our front styling up in a bit.
