T5 written off in a crash yesterday any tips on insurance etc

This is all well and good but In reality when you tell a future purchaser that the vehicle has been in an accident that cost £24k to repair ( which you are obligated to tell them) unless you are going to give a hefty discount you may well find it very difficult to sell.
Its a good job the repairer bought it off me in a private sale then, please do not question my morality or assume I mislead anyone or indeed intend to.

A vehicle is only considered a right off for insurance purposes when the cost to repair the vehicle to the pre accident condition exceeds it current market value.
The old way of calculating a write off by % of its pre accident / market value has long since been ditched by insurers.

Yes, I was thinking that too.
Written off at the scene? Very unusual. Who by? Usually you need to wait for an official kiss of doom from the assurance assessor but having said that I did once agree a write off over the phone after listing all the damage and discussing with insurers.

File of similar vehicles and prices is a must to help with negotiations. WBAC? I wouldnt personally. They offer a price to make them an easy profit.

Horrible situation for you; glad to hear you and your family are all ok. Some excellent advice on this thread - I would certainly Reccomended getting a reputable accident management company involved to take the stress away from you..

Get any receipts to prove added value they should take these into account don’t accept 1, 2 nd offer barter hard and get screenshots of similar vehicles for sale in Your area
Was in claims for a major insurer as the other party has admitted get them to provide similar Van untilsettled that usually kicks them to settle a bill will increase quickly.
I used to write off at roadside depending if over 3 years and airbags have deployed write off so very common as is damage driven. You can change mind until settled, or get buyback value.

So sorry to hear of your accident and glad you're all ok. Where abouts in Norfolk was this? I bet it was in North Norfolk around Holt area? There seem to be quite a lot around that area at the moment with biggest cause being big whites trying to get around the small lanes and meeting very large tractors head on!!!!

My son missed having a head on by a near squeak. He was near his home coming round a corner with high overgrown banks, poor visibility doing around 30mph when all of a sudden a VW T6 camper (not a Cali) came roaring round the corner (he reckons about 60mph) he hit his brakes and tried to quickly get into reverse but got neutral in his BMW 530d est and waited for the bang - the camper still kept coming with wheels locked up. Somehow the driver managed to pull it left and along the bank ending up around 4 car lengths behind my son in middle of road blocking it (shows the speed even when braking). It stopped just short of a builders van that was following my son. Chap got out un hurt and had his head in his hands - front of camper was mess with bumper and parts across road including nearside wheel and drive shaft!!! He reckoned he had wasp sting him...........................................thankfully my sons car was un touched and van behind was able to stop in time - van driver said the guy was driving recklessly!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all above who replied to this post back in August. I'm happy to say that we did reach a settlement with the insurance company. It took a while and wasn't;t pleasant. we are however looking for a new Cali. But the insurance money doesn't seem to stretch with latest bump in prices over the last 6 months. We are looking for an automatic T5 - T6 and preferably with a middle rail so if anyone know of one would be grateful if you can let me know.

Well that is good news but sad how long it has taken - take care when driving in Norfolk - there were big whites out today on A11 apparantly all over the place in Storm Eunace; police were talking to one driver - obviously it's half term here.

Good luck in your quest.........................I'm leaving it till price stabilise

Glad you got it sorted out and good luck with the hunt for a new van.

Can I ask who you were insured with and how would you rate them? Very interested as you only know how good they are when you have to claim off them!

Thanks,

Hi There,

We were insured with Admiral and I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN it has been dreadful and we had to get our family home from our holiday on our own and return to Norfolk again to collect the contents of our Van a few days later as they were going to take it away, we still haven't got costs and its been an extremely time consuming exercise

To be fair as far as I understand it Admiral are not a specific Campervan / Motorhome insurance company.

But the points made above would be covered by your travel insurance / breakdown cover surely? Not aware any car / campervan insurance would cover onward travel etc.? Am I wrong?

Hi All
Just reading this thread and have a similar situation. 2013 Cali SE TDi 180 just smashed by an errant Amazon driver in his van in a scary head on! Awaiting assessment but I would like to build a portfolio of prices for comparison and the I can envisage arguments over value.
I can't see recent adverts of say 2012 2013 2014 models so if anyone has them could they forward or the admin even maybe? I can then have evidence of what its going to be to replace this not just a 'glasses guide'. Whilst it means nothing I spent plenty keeping this tip top so want to at least get a decent settlement.
While sore and stiff, airbags and the solidity of the van has meant I can at least reset and go again. Thankful for that at least. In the rush to deliver some £5 nonsense in an allotted delivery slot time two vehicles smashed to pieces and two sore drivers. The world has gone mad.........

So sorry to hear this and hope you will soon feel less sore physically. But the loss of your van is another sore that won't heal so rapidly!
Our son is a crash detective (investigates serious road incidents) and he has convinced me that VW vans are good vehicles to be in should you be involved in an accident. On that point, you were probably fortunate.
I hope you get the information you are looking for and minimal hassle from the insurance company. I assume that as it was the other driver at fault, they will pay your excess, which is a small consolation, I realise.
I am just so sorry this has happened to you.

I would involve my insurance company from the outset. Do you have legal cover through your policy? They can help you fight your corner.

I had my car written off by the only other person driving in lockdown said he didn't see me, I produced the full MOT history with no fails or advisory's as well as the service history and luckily for me a very recent picture, when my car was assessed even the assessor commented how clean it was for it's age, this gave me a stronger hand to haggle the valuation up, don't forget anything that is added like isotop or brandrup carpets can be removed as the vehicle didn't come with it and you don't get any extra payment from the insurers if you leave them.
Ps, don't forget the gas bottle :D

Thanks all. Yep going tomorrow to clear it out of all but the necessary before it disappears to storage. I have legal and I have to say Safeguard [via Carpenters] so far have been quite good. I'll reserve full judgement however til I have funds in my account!*?
Glasses; WBAC or motorway is very disappointing so I need to have something to show or I'll stick out for a rebuild but when there's an intercooler radiator hoses looms and airbox scattered across the road with oil and water running out the bottom of the engine I have to think its not looking good.
Its really the prices of something similar I need. Weirdly there are none like it around at the moment.
I can vouch for the strength tho and the airbags really saved me.
I certainly won't be buying any spares via Amazon......... twonks!

Last October my car was written of, I was overtaking a car and the driver changed lanes without looking, punting me off the road into a fenland hedge and field ( note : Brembo brakes don’t work in mid air ) he accepted full liability. My insurance organised the recovery and storage. His insurance phoned me offering money to let them handle the claim and leave mine out of it other than for information. The claim was paid within 10 days, well over book price, all expenses covered, an additional payment of £500 and a Volvo XC 90 for a fortnight (horrible vehicle ). This was to supposedly to keep their costs to a minimum and speed up the process, and of course I’m not listed as making a claim on the insurance data base. So, apart from the cause, the whole process was quick and efficient, the total opposite of what I was expecting. You maybe pleasantly surprised too.

I’ve always insisted on an agreed valuation. No idea if it pays dividends but it makes me feel happier.

If you had child seats fitted make sure you claim for them too.
£300 each
Whiplash is another £300

Honestly you will struggle to recover what's its really worth so every little helps

Sorry to hear this, and glad that you walked away from it.
The attached YouTube video popped up in my feed a while ago and might give you an idea of the components that are impacted and maybe help you decide if you are happy to have it rebuilt or not. Also a bit of an insight in to why vehicles get written off so easily today due to the labour cost involved whilst at the same time being an opportunity for people that buy the salvage and know how to bolt it all back together again.
