Insurance nightmare!

Just gave up with Admiral -first call went to an Indian call center - spent 20 mins spelling out all the options - then put back to the UK car line, then put back to the UK van line (another 10 mins spelling out things ) then put back to India the car line - back to the same questions the first time around ... gave up. Useless and disappointing as I already have 3 cars with them. I am not sure they insure Oceans anyway - can anybody confirm this ? Thanks Scoobz

Ah the saga continues they have just phoned me back -had to go through everything again - classed the awning as an external modification, but wait for it, for a late 2019 Ocean they want the equivalent of £224 for the year (can't be right). I am sure I read something on this forum that they don't insure anything with running water !

My SE is insured with them as part of a multi car package. As far as the awning is concerned, it will be seen as a modification like all options that are not fitted as standard. Basically I listed everything that was shown as an option on the original invoice as additions to the base vehicle, different wheels, powered door etc.

we ended up going with Comfort for the van, head a multi cover with LV but when specifically questioned on ‘full habitation cover’ they were clear that “we would need to go to a specialist insurer” .. that was clear enough for me !
Comfort were pretty good they have two policy options one ‘Campervan’ which is mostly aimed at conversions whereas ‘Motorhome’ policy specifically includes VW California Ocean so other than their 48 hr rule (which we can live with) it suited all our needs and in cost terms not much more than LV !

When I spoke to them they were happy that anything fitted by the manufacturer as "standard" wasn't a modification.

Think that’s what I was saying....
In the case of the awning. For 2013 SEs the silver awning was a £550 option, so was not a standard and would be need to be declared as a option/mod.

Did you spec yours? Mine was listed with the awning already fitted so they didn't consider it a modification, despite it being something you would select as a mod if you built your own spec.

They had no issue with any options that were supplied by the manufacturer including awning etc. point being that they are from the manufacturer and not a third party products (are still supplied and fitted by VW). The example I was given is the standard heating system or third party one, engine chipped or EGR blanked as they are non standard and considered modifications. I’m guessing there would be on loading of the policy but just a note that it was declared.

Bought mine second hand so it came with lots of add on options which are listed on the original invoice ( when new ). So as all these options add to value of the base vehicle I would want them included in the value of the insured vehicle, should it be written off or if I claimed for a stolen awning.
I tend to er on the cautious side as far as insurance is concerned!

This is Admiral’s definition......

Any changes to your cars standard specification, including accessories and additional parts; optional extras and after market alterations; trade related changes and parts. These include, but are not restricted to, cosmetic and/or performance changes or changes related to your business or profession.

So I treat “optional extras” as any options that are over and above the base spec.

One of the things they mentioned is that I wouldn't be covered to drive other people's cars under my third party insurance plus they couldn't grantee a courtesy car in the case of an accident (not sure whether the latter just applies abroad or here ) . Anybody else come across this with Admiral ?

They don’t insure California’s fully ie no habitation area!!

if you pick this up it was true at the time, as it was discoverd that they weren’t. I like many others cancelled I was only 3 months in so 9 months wasted. They contacted me and others to clarify why I and others cancelled. Had a long conversation with there insurance compliance manager and explained why, not only that it was recorded as a diesel car.

They have since addressed the policy and mad it clear what’s insured and not, with that I have now insured my GC with LV and happy with the coverage and the cost £315.

You now benefit from our loss.

Pays to know the full story.
