It seems that child car seats have a ‘use by date’ and although I cannot see if this is legally binding I’m not willing to take any chances. So, now that our youngest child’s car seat is officially out of date we are in the market for a replacement.

Ideally we would like a Group 1/2/3 Seat, but the problem is that I cannot find one manufacturer that has approved installation in a T6 Cali.

Britax Römer have tested the T5 Cali, but have told me the following:

“...As we have not had a VW T6 California Ocean for testing I’m afraid we cannot directly approve installation of any of our car seats...”

I’ve looked at the Maxi Cosi & Jané websites and neither have approved the use of their Isofix seats in the T6 Cali either.

So has anyone looked into this and found a solution?

As Britax Römer have tested and approved the T5 Cali, I guess I could ask VW if the design of the seats, Isofix anchors and tether points are the same in the T6, but as ever any advice would be appreciated.

image.png When I wanted to buy a Britax Dualfix seat, Britax told Mothercare that their T5 California tests were in a Beach, not SE and therefore Mothercare refused to sell me the seat even though they had already successfully fitted it in the camper. After many emails to Britax, Maxi cosi etc etc I bought a Britax Duoplus with added top tether from Halfords as when combined with top tether It's approval changed from semi-universal to universal approval for any car with isofix and top tether points. I think the new Trifix2 has the same setup, These seats are only for 15months to 4 yr olds.
For rear facing infant seats, ones fitted using the seatbelt rather than isofix sometimes have similar safety ratings on 'Which' and I think the retailer can check the fit of these, unlike the isofix ones which have only semi-universal approval, subject to being on the specific manufacturers car approval list showing its been tested in that specific vehicle.

Thanks for the information, I will have a look at the Britax Römer Seat, but they seemed clear that they haven’t tested the T6.

I did go into Halfords earlier today and they were unable to get any of their Isofix test seats to fit, unless the backrest was virtually bolt upright. I’ve now sent VW customer service a request so I’ll see what they have to say.

The California handbook shows that the backrest on the SE 2 seat bench needs to be reclined to actually fit the seat to the connectors then returned to the upright position after fitting. That is the only way I have ever been able to fit isofix to it.
The reason I mentioned the Trifix2 was that if it has universal approval for any car with isofix and top tether points, it wouldn't need specific testing in the T6 only checked at purchase, by Halfords specialist. Britax customer service would be able to tell you if any of their seats have this type of approval.
I got useless 'help' from VW customer service - maybe you will have better luck.

I completely sympathise with your situation, isofix was supposed to make things simple but it's definitely not that simple when you don't have a normal car.

We have the maxi Cosi titan from Halfords which has isofix. We chose it as the recaro hero with belted attachment slid and moved when going round corners - the recaro was apparently on the approved car list that Halfords had but the fitting was horrible even on our touran.

We fitted the store model outside Halfords and did tilt the 2 seater bench back slightly on fitting.i have no concerns about the safety fitting on the maxi Cosi titan it feels safe and secure.
