…food packed, diesel tank topped up, a few bottles of wine stashed and were just about ready to head off on our first big trip - Orkney and all points north. It maybe cold, wet and snowy but what the hell! Two weeks discovering the smaller islands and as much of the of the neolithic archaeology as we can manage, and if the weather get too bad we can get cosy with a glass of whisky and a good book. We're getting just a wee bit excited.

The orkneys are great. The standing stones of stennes are fascinating. Don't miss scara brae. Amazing complete neolithic housing there much older than the pyramids and stone henge. We went over to westray but to be fair there's not much there but it's magnificent desolation and wildlife are amazing. Enjoy.. Do wild camp on Orkney too. We had no problems and even cmoed right on the beach.
