When I wind my awning out it gets to a certain point and then if I continue to wind it out more it then goes loose and sags. Is this normal?

Keep winding out and moving the legs and all will become clear.

Yes, but at this point just rewind a tiny amount to retighten the canvas and that is it fully opened and taught.
