Can anyone recommend a campsite in/around Toulouse or on way to/around Carcasson for just one night? Read a few poor reviews of some, but they're quite old, so looking for more recent experiences. Keep hearing that Toulouse has some very dodgy areas, be careful where you park your campervan during the day on the street etc, is that still current? Thanks!

I went thru the same process as you and concluded sites around Carcassonne were a combo of rubbish, demanded multiple nights stay, were over-priced or were a combination of the 3...
In the end we booked into Ibis budget Carcassonne La Cité for a night. Excellent location, decent enough, pretty cheap and I was able to park the van for free in their car park.

Hotels on a van trip are normally a "no-no" for me, but it worked well for Carcassonne

In August we also chose a budget hotel just outside Carcassonne (Audotel, Rn 113, 11000 Carcassonne). Family run, superb breakfast, very friendly and cheap (£112 for a family room). Easy to drive into Carcassonne for the evening and safe parking, with a secure garage for bikes. Carcassonne felt 100% safe, whereas Toulouse can be dodgy.

Thanks to you all. We have changed our plans and will be visiting Carcassone and Narbonne instead. Thinking of staying over at either Grissan or Narbonne. With Park4night loaded on the phone (thanks for the tip @chockswahay - do you get much more info from signing up or do you use the free version?), we're undecided whether to chance it or there might be a lovely campsite by the beach at Grissan. Some of the campsites we've stayed at through Pitchup have been a bit... well... ok but we're either going to risk it with a parking space or wouldn't mind a really nice campsite for the night by the sea. Any recommendations out there?

If its any use, after our overnight at Carcassonne stayed six nights at the Falaise Narbonne Plage, Rue des Vacances 11100 NARBONNE PLAGE. Its a big Eurocamp style site with pools (with flumes) restaurant, bars etc. on site. Great for the kids. Easy 5 min walk to bakery and other shops, 10 mins walk to the beach. Quite a big organised site, mainly laid out with fixed mobile homes, but a decent number of hook up pitches for vans. Possibly not everyone’s cup of tea but we found it a very good base to explore the region and have all the facilities you could wish for on site. We booked through Canvas holidays but no doubt you can go direct.

We stayed at Camping Paradis Barberousse, beside the marina at Gruissan for a few nights last month. Its 5 minutes walk into town where there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from and 10 minutes by bike down to the beach. The site was 18 euros a night with ACSI card it was quiet in September but looked like it would be busy in high season kids play park and animation. Only down side was our pitch was close to the site boundary where opposite is a car repair garage which opened up at 07:30 first job turn on the air compressor!! That said we would certainly go back there is lots to explore in the area.

Ya know I can’t really remember……. But for a few quid I think it’s well worth it. You can filter the search parameters as you see fit and appropriate to the need. Many campsites and Aires are on there, not just off grid stuff :thumb

Great tips - thanks. Because of timing, weather etc we ended up staying at a municipal car park among olive trees in the beautiful town of Lagrasse (€8), then because every mountain hilly road we tried to take to get back was blocked over ravines with detours which seemed to lead us back to another blocked road, we had a very on the spur/ok-it's-pitch-black-and-gone-10pm-we're-never-going-to-get-out-of-here night at the municipal car park at the foot of the ramparts/what was the drained canal from the 1700s in Mont-Louis (usually €7 but in winter free), a wonderful small very "French" walled town built for the fort .

Both through Park4night - what a find!
