Tracker options for new California

Could anyone suggest a tracker option for a new California Ocean on order. It looks like all insurers now seem to insist on an approved one being fitted.
Also be glad to hear if insurers that don’t require one.

Thanks - Andrew.

NFU Mutual don't require on.

I’ve been with Comfort for 2 years and they don’t require one. After some deliberation, i’ve reinsured with them for another year.

There is a tracker in built into the media centre accessible via the vw app

Not quite @The Tall Luthier , I believe in WeConnect you can only see the last parked position. I’m not sure it updates if the car is towed away or moved on a truck? and I don’t believe there’s any way of real time tracking. If anybody knows different please advise.

** Update for Future readers**

The below was true-ish, up to earlier this year when the ability to zone and track your vehicle through WE was removed due to privacy. Reading between the lines people were able to use it to track cars they should not have been and they couldn't be bothered redesigning the app to stop that happening.

So We tells you where your car last was when the ignition was turned off (parked). That's it now.

WeConnect tells you the current position of the Van. I don’t know about the T6 but the 6.1 comes with a curtailed sim in it that is used for low level OTA updates and also connecting to the OBDC via the LTE network. That way you can use WE to connect to the van from anywhere and see it’s GPS position, locked status, lights, etc. I’ve used WE to unlock my van in a carpark when I walked all the way up from a beach and forgot my keys.

For the specific question you can setup zones as well and if you van moves out of that zone you get an alert, so if it was being towed or stolen you would see where it was live.

It’s a bit of a faf to setup but when you have done it it works well.

Yes, I have WeConnect and can obviously check the status of the van etc but I’m still not sure about the tracking capability? Hope you’re correct :)
Will check that tomorrow when I go for a drive by logging into WeConnect, bring up the map and see if it updates in real time as the van moves.

I agree with @dspuk. That said I have still hidden an Apple AirTag in their too. I figure if anyone is serious about taking the cali they will know how to disarm the main tracker.

Now I have gone in I can’t find the setting that you used to use to put a zone around your vehicle.

That said you can click on map and regardless of where you are with the phone, it will show you where your Cali is parked. If it was moving would show that too but as far as I can see you can only set an alert if the alarm goes off, not if it goes out of an area. So you would have to know it had gone in the first place (which can only happen if they steal your keys).

They deleted it earlier this year. Shame.

On the 6.1 the van sends the location after the engine has been turned off. It does not have real-time tracking, or at least my 2020 6.1 doesn't.

Replying to the original question, when we had our Ghost fitted the installer said trackers are generally a waste of time as the professional thieves block them. Just Google GPS tracker blocker. And he installs trackers as well!

I use a trident tracker with real-time monitoring. GT will alert you / call/ if the car is moved without ignition in and also alert police.
It’s £12.49 a month subscription.
It’s fitted by an authorised installer from Autowatch who also installs my ghost 2 immobiliser.
It’s not a lot of money if you want something back that is taken and it means no stress when they get stolen.
If you can wait 12 months without, whilst you wait for a new one, then don’t bother.
Most stolen cars are parked overnight somewhere to see if you have a tracker on.
If it’s there a couple of days later they know they can then take away and strip for parts. Or off it goes to the UAE, or Russia, or Africa in a container.

Just tested mine. Quite happily moves as I do and gives live location when on map view.

That’s very interesting. I tested mine this morning and it didn’t show a ‘live’ view on the map. Nor when I parked at our local farm shop. See screen shot.

@dspuk are you sure that what you are seeing on the map isn’t the position of your phone rather than the position of your van?

Just checked - you are 100% right. So, to focus on my original response, all complete twaddle. I would have been partly right if they still did the zone warnings, but having removed that for GDPR then all you get is a parking position.

Same. Went ScorpionTrack and ghost immobiliser. Feel much safer tbh

Scorpion do a S5+ tracker plus immobiliser. That means the van could be immobilised remotely if stolen and stationary. They also have a subscription option for ‘life’ which if you plan to keep the van for over 4/ 5 years works out better.

I use these for a couple of vehicles I have, easy to install and configure and really good value given the features!
