although mine will be safely into the L year letter by the time it does finally arrive.

At least in the UK you can get a cheap random private plate to replace it! Spanish numbers stay with the vehicle for life!

Nope! France is the same.
They scrapped the Region marker a few years ago too - you were always guaranteed to get searched at border crossings in the old ETA days with a San Sebastián plate.
