This article, published recently, shows that VW far from being the evil polluter, is actually one of the better ones in real road situations. The others just passed the emissions test on a technicality.

I think the real villain of the piece is the EU with it's labyrinthine testing rules. Far more straightforward is to take a few vehicles straight off the production line at random, run them round a standard test track and measure the results. Like the US does. Easy.

No doubt many car manufacturers are beginning to twitch at the fear of being caught. Because if one figured out how to do it, success in engineering seldom, if ever, stay a secret.

The VW Audi emissions scandal lacked a little clarity for my understanding but the above article gives a simplified version for me (I may have assumed incorrectly that US and Euro issues are the same?).

If you click on the Equa Index on "the Truth" page for example that the VW Tiguan is legal under the new tests in real life driving, but the Nissan Qashqai is up to 18 times above the limit. https://equaindex.com/
A 2012 California is there but you can see a VW Transporter Highline which is probably near to ours.

That was an interesting read. I have owned a 1997 Landrover Defender 300tdi for 18 years now. I love it, but...it is a high polluter and needs a lot of chassis/body repairs. I have been debating with my self for years whether to keep it, particularly as I don't use it much. The thing is, it is still worth about 6k. I could use that money to go agains a replacement engine for my 2011 CFCA engine...!

That's interesting. Coincidentally, only last Saturday I was walking through a carpark in Canterbury with our eldest son. We passed a very battered ancient Land Rover that was parked next to a new Tesla. Seeing these two vehicles parked side by side I posed the question: Which vehicle was the most environmentally friendly?

Taking whole life pollution into account including manufacture and scrappage, my money is firmly on the Land Rover.

The Land Rover purely because it has been used for longer and the initial energy to produce a car and all the associated parts etc take an inordinate amount of resources and energy, and similarly the end of life issues, which should be considered over the life of the vehicle. However the Tesla would pass more emissions tests !
Not sure how modern battery manufacturing , resources, energy requirements over the life of the vehicle and subsequent disposal costs and environmental issues should be measured ?
However that’s not what is being measured in today’s society
