Hi all
I would be interested to know what fuel you use at the forecourt :D
Options being standard,premium or supermarket
I normaly fill with standard fuel and premium every third fill (if that makes sense)
Also does using premium grade keep our engines cleaner ?
Although I haven't carried out any trials I feel I'm getting more mileage from premium per tank (although not sure)

Alan

Whichever is cheapest, now done 110,000 miles and no problems, have averaged over this mileage 34mpg :cool

I have always been wary of supermarket fuels. There have been scare stories for a while but I do recall a story when a load of cars were wrecked by one that served dodgy fuel.

Honest john recommends all diesels are run on premium diesel. I follow this advice as diesel cars have changed massively in recent years (quieter, less smoke, faster ...) so they are finely tuned but fragile things. Injectors and Dpf are mega money if you have a problem

Quotes from honest john ....
"I use premium petrol or premium diesel in everything I run for an extended period rather than just buy and sell."

"The V-Power diesel (or BP Ultimate diesel) will help to keep the fuel system clean, will lubricate the fuel injection pump better and will give the engine a little more power."

I run on branded (Shell or BP) non-supermarket fuel purchased from garages that sell in decent volumes. I find I get marginally better MPG on these when compared to supermarkets and feel the additional additives are likely to do no harm. I don't run on premium despite working for a oil company who give me a very small discount on this product that helps close the cost gap. This is becuase I have never noticed any difference on a normal diesel vehicle .... on a turbo petrol engine I do ocassionally use. Not sure if that helps!?

I did feel that on my last diesel, a Honda CR-V, that supermarket diesel did not give as smooth a ride with more burps and farts from the engine than I ever experienced with branded, Shell & Esso mainly, supplies. On a motorbike the petrol from supermarkets would definitely result in rougher running and i became quite fussy about fuel.

Result is that I never use supermarket fuel.

As to using the premium grade of diesel, I used to do every third tank as premium but have yet to do this in the Cali but probably will start doing so. It worked well in my Honda diesel and sounded like good advice from the diesel specialist mechanic who recommended it.

Thanks for reminding me, next tank will be a premium grade and probably every third or fourth tank thereafter.

I never use supermarket fuel, only proper fuel. My personal choice is esso, I've used the v nitro stuff, bp ultimate etc but for best power and mpg esso wins for me. I'm anal about fuel, I reset the odometer every time.

It's a van, I use diesel. Which is fine in all of the UK.

The car gets better stuff (i.e. never supermarket) but still non "premium."

Agree with you entirely, it is a van conversion not as good as the german version but is still a VAN

up until 2012 I used to work as a HAZCHEM driver , all supermarket fuels are made to the same British Standard, and come from the same refineries used by by the big name brands, the only ones with additives will be the super diesel etc.. which are vastly overpriced. Best things is to buy standard fuel and add your own additives if you feel it is necessary.
