Which ABS sensor?

2 weeks ago whilst out of the country, the ABS/traction control lights and tyre pressure warnings came up on the dash. Not much I could do at the time and it was initially driving normally. A week later, we did notice some acceleration hesitation and occasionally switched to manual gear changes, but made it home fine.

I've now run OBD2 diagnostics and it's reporting problems with 3 separate sensors ( both front and rear right ). I've cleared these, and the same errors come back after just rolling back and forth on the driveway. Just wondering how likely it is that all 3 have failed in the past two weeks before I order these? Presumably if there were wiring issues or the ABS unit itself, I'd see failures from all 4 sensors?

I'm still running the original 10 year old starter battery, so I'm going to pick up a replacement today. I've seen some threads reporting false errors due to low battery voltage?

I have the exact same T5 2015 DSG 4Motion as yourself. I had a sensor fail in the last 6 months which was replaced then another fail (within 1 month of the initial failure). When the sensors initially failed I could restart my Cali but the fault got worse and used to appear when driving which was most disconcerting. From memory they were on opposite sides, one at the front and one at the back. The joys of a 10yr old vehicle.

You could be right.

Main battery swapped out today and it started up much quicker. Went for a quick spin to see if the warnings would reset, but after a couple of minutes the spedo and fuel gauge cut out to zero with refuel now warnings. Rev counter is working, but the odometer isn't increasing, no cruise control, all the abs/traction/brake warnings lights are on. And a continuous blinking glow plugs lamp. But, she's driving ( and braking ) just fine ;-)

Are there any secret tricks I'm missing after a battery swap? Other than going through all the fuses, I think I'll be needing a visit to the garage..

You need to programme the battery to the vehicle.

You need to programme the battery to the vehicle.
You only need to program the Battery to the vehicle if it is a Bluemotion vehicle with Start-Stop AND the battery type/size has changed.

The BMS sensor will recalibrate to a new battery automatically after a few sleep cycles without having to do anything. If the Battery size or type has been changed then the BCM needs to know this to adjust the calculations for the Battery control.

Module 3 has four faults and it looks to me that the voltage failure is impeding the three sensor tests.
If the new battery is the same spec, I'd clear all your faults and concentrate on what returns.
You should get the steering sensor and all the ABS lights and possibly the ECU light (Glowplug Coil) after reconnecting a cranking battery

Need to change mine over and its a mine field.

Its Varta A7 and intelligent so no codes are noted on the battery that I can see. Slightly different spec (70Ah vs 75Ah and 760A vs 800A) but the recommended replacement for the original Varta which has finally died

A Varta A7 is AGM for Start-Stop, does a T5 have start Stop? A true AGM battery has a different charging characteristic and top end voltage to the traditional Sealed Maintenance Free Lead Acid it probably replaced, you might have bought too posh a replacement!

Does the Battery Earth clamp have an extra small module attached to it, if so this is the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) and means the system has a smart element and if they battery has changed size then to optimise the system, you should recode it to match new battery.

A BMS is fitted to vehicles with Stop-Start, this was fitted to some T5s, but not all.

If it is just a standard Earth clamp and cable to the body, then it is not smart and doesn't need coding.

Got this on my 2016 t6. Fault cleared on its own. Recently swapped rear brakes so suspect a rear in my case. Carista ordered. Vw wanted 107 quid per sensor. I've got the part numbers but wasn't paying that. I'll let you know what I find. For now my fault cleared. I had a snide abs sensor fitted to an old bmw. Threw up lots of strange faults including rev counter, steering angle etc. Wouldn't even let me take the key out.

All those lights work on input from wheel rotation sensor (ABS). Just need to get some new aftermarket sensors and replace them, I've done them on Caddy's and Transporters and Smart Cars, easy enough, you may need a hairdryer/heat gun to apply some local heat because VW like to glue them in

Here’s a thing about battery coding.

Yep I have this module on the earth cable...

As far as I understand recoding the battery is purely to optimise charging and to set when stop start gets disabled. I have a T5 blue motion from that year and all 4 sensors went within 6 months of each other.
in my opinion replacing all 3 sensors is your next best move. It will cost less than £100 and is highly likely to solve the issue.
if you’re unsure of part numbers I’ve always found eurocarparts very reliable. Just put in your reg and it only shows you the ones that work on your vehicle.
