Which portable stove would you recommend?

So this v2 is also about 30cm? Because there seems to exist a 50cm version as well?
I think I want the compact model for storage space, but I'm a bit concerned as we are 5 (3 children) and so I wonder if it's large enough.. they say max 4 persons. Though we have a small cartridge cooker as well.

I will take more pictures at the weekend

I've also just bought this version - great size to pack away and seems to be everything I need. It will replace the Cobb which we'll now use at home. As for size it packs to half the size of the Cobb.

It is going to get a good testing this weekend - we used to take secondary stove (and gas of course) when camping with larger groups of friends so whilst I have BBQd on this I will use the other "modes" in earnest

I just got a Cadac Safari Chef 2 for my birthday. Looks awesome. I am aware that I have a crazy amount of stoves though. I think I have a bad habit. I was pondering doing a boil test on each to compare their effectiveness.

I have at the moment:

A Camping Gaz Bistro - Good for light use, small in a case, good for boiling the kettle occasionally or warming up some food. Cons small capacity in those aerosol gas canisters but they are cheap if bought in bulk. I got the burner for £7 in a sale. Bargain

Camping Gaz Folding double burner - old but good, if a little bulky. Works with most gas bottles as the connector takes a rubber hose, also has a grill. Good hot flame, although it can reduce when using all three due to pressure. Cons bulky and large.

Gel Fuel - Can Twin Burner. Compact, somewhere between the two. Doesn't burn as hot, but doesn't have pressurised containers. The gel does smell in the bottle but if you spill it, it evaporates leaving no smell that I can tell. The gel is also pretty cheap and available most places.

How about one of these?

I have just bought one. It is a good diameter so therefore supports your kettle or pan properly. Its very well made and simply screws directly onto the top of a Campingaz 907 cylinder. There is also a built in carrying handle. I suggest that it would be ideal for making a brew and for one pot cooking. It's biggest advantage is that it takes up very little space.
Having said all this I haven't tried it out yet.

Yes I have one of these and used it to compliment my Cobb on last trip. It does a good job and yes takes up no space at all. However we found we couldn't use the Cobb at many campsites so have now replaced it with Cadac safari. We'll probably not take this Carena unit with us on next trip as the Cadac seems to cover both options as as I said previously takes up hardly any space.

What size is the smallest possible gas bottle for the cadac safari chef v2? Can anyone measure it? Also dimensions of the chef when packed... Can't seem to find that.

Depends if it's low or high pressure model. Hp uses small canisters, lp can use bigger ones and smaller with an adapter.

We also use the Camping gaz Super Carena. Excellent for one pot cooking outside. Also means we always have back up gaz should the cylinder in the van run out.

Thanks for clearing that out. It seems only the LP model is sold here. Can't seem to find anything about that adapter.
"The smaller ones" are that these:

and "the bigger ones" are that these:

How about this solution for a Beach - leave it hanging on the table rail its bag when stowed, flip it round and instant tea / coffee acility. i have contacted Maxxcamp but they say it was not designed to stand alone (on the rail) it is supposed to be bought with their kitchen installation as an extra. i will buy one and see how it fits, but the rail profiles are similar so i think it might do the job maxxcamp-konsol -01.jpg maxxcamp-konsol -01.jpg maxxcamp-konsol -02.jpg

I used a camping gaz lp 28mb bottle as per the pic above, not as big as the one you've shown. I've not got a high pressure adapter so I'm not sure on the exact bottles but it's probably the ones you linked, this is a pic of one I've seen.

Some campsites don't allow them due to the risk of burning the grass although they don't.
In Spain and France at certain times of the year BBQs can't be used because of the risk of setting fire to the countryside.

Yes that's correct (sorry Jeff only just saw your post). As regards the Cobb we are still keeping it to use locally and UK. There will be barbecue areas on sites where you could use it in France / Spain etc but on balance given the limited room in the van we have now downsized to the Cadac. I always remember reading a horror story of a British holidaymaker arrested at Calais on a European arrest arrant and returned under escort to Greece, falsely accused of staring a forest fire via barbecue. He was subsequently released and was not involved - a nightmare scenario of course.
Here's a couple of photos of theCobb, wild camping, one on the beach in Halkidiki and one in a remote part of Southern Albania.

We have been on campsites in Spain where there is a total ban on any BBQs in the dry season even the built in campsites own BBQs were not allowed to be used for fear of setting the surrounding countryside alight.

Coleman unleaded 2-burner stove is great! Particularly when travelling off the beaten track as it takes unleaded fuel, as well as Coleman liquid fuel.also you can fit larger pots and pans on it, specially good when travelling with hungry kids!
  • Power: 4225 Watt
  • Burning time on one tank: tot 2 uur
  • Measurements: 46 x 29 x 12 cm
  • Weight: 5300 grammes
  • And last but not least... It looks great

Is version 2 the larger model which sits higher than safari model. If so do the legs fold away? Does it take up much room in the van?
We found that safari chef 2 is fantastic but the regulator had to be unscrewed and removed each time to be able to fold the legs away and fit it into the bag.

Just purchased a quick release connector hope it sorts that as it was our only minor gripe. Great to cook on.

Many thanks - great idea - just ordered off Amazon :)

Just put the Cobb on the table and get cooking never had a problem . Just tell them it's a charcoal oven not a barbie.

Ive just bought 2 x Brunner Devil gas stoves - and seem spot on for the money. You can connect different gas canisters - incl the Colman C300 and the aerosol types - via a gas hose. They fit under the three seat Beach space with room for gas can. Seem good quality and well engineered
