About 3 to 4 years. Does also depend on use. Low usage could give you 5 years. I tend to swop the key fobs around every year and renew both batteries at 3 years regardless. Now there's a strange thing,I thought my key fob was on the blink last week
Went around the van 3 times pressing the fob trying to get in
It wasn't till I was confronted by a panicking Frenchman that I realized it wasn't my van
Hope you get it sorted soon
Incidentally I have wondered what the average life span is for the battery in the key fob?

Perhaps it is to do with where you store the key it is being woken up (like it is when you put the key in the ignition a coil around the lock calls the key to check its code) Try wrapping it in tinfoil for a few days and see if it holds it charge. Will try but I think it's a battery drain issue as puting a new battery in makes it work again (for a couple of days). The replaced battery does not work so it's not like 'restarting' the power to the key is fixing it.
And surprise - 30 hrs on from my promised call back from VW still nothing...
