Cali classification for ferry bookings

Hi Shadrack, I just made an enquiry (Dover/Calais) via Aferry and a Cali came out the same cost as a Golf if you, as you say, select the 'Specific car & model' option. You may have found a loophole! The cheapest DFS return fair is £98 in Jun/July for a 'Specific car & model' option i.e. a Cali and £124 for a "Motorhome" 6m x 2.35m. So this could be a result!

I also looked at Frequent Tunneller tick on the Eurotunnel site. It looks as if you can book minimum 10 tickets (single) for £440 with no specific vehicle specified. Tickets lasts a year and are transferable to another driver (you have to specify when purchasing tickets). Potentially this looks a bargain even if you don't use all the tickets. Worth investigating further.

You have to pay £11 supplement when you book. It will ask for your reg number and look up your vehicle.

However it still means that each leg can be as cheap as £55 or £75 if you travel peak times.

Thanks Jen, I was looking at getting FT account after my earlier post and just saw the supplement bit! You saved me the call to their customer service to get the surcharge value but as you say at £11 it still looks good value. I just picked a random out date of 30th June and back date of 21st July for a campervan. Lowest off peak is £103. Definitely worth bearing in mind if you plan three or more trips on this route.

Is it possible then for frequent users who take up this option to perhaps sell spare tickets they won't need to other Cali owners looking for a ticket?? Could bring the cost down for all involved.

I've tried to think of reasons why not but can only think of one! Once the tickets are used it might be the case that they are linked to a registration number. Not sure I would sell to other Cali owner for them to find this is the case! It would be a bit of an "ooops" moment! In any event you would still have to name that driver when you initially buy the ticket.

I recently made two bookings via Aferry.... Dublin-Holyhead and Dover-Dunkirk, both returns. For both I selected Cali as car type (mines a Beach, but their wedsite doesn't distinguish between Beach/Ocean/SE etc.) Both bookings were charged at the same rate as small car. The booking confirmation emails, show the max height/length, and these are greater than the Cali's dimensions. I think I'll be using Aferry again in future, as worked out 25% less than via Stenline & DFDS websites directly.

When you check in you have to check in with the card that the frequent tunneller deal was paid with.

Sorry, you can have a ticket but I'm not giving you my credit card as well :D

Aw, you are a spoilsport. ;)
You make a good point and one I should have spotted. Thanks.:thumb

It's still an excellent deal. I pop over to France/Belgium roughly once every other month, often more frequent, so it's a no-brainer.

Yes, I agree great deal. My "spoilsport" comment was only because you wouldn't lend me your credit card to make it an even better deal!!:)

We are just an hour along the A20 and M20 from Eurotunnel, I'm sure we could manage five return trips per year. I will have to investigate further.

Yes, we always use aferry, and have never had issues with car type etc. And never found anything cheaper.

Sorry, but what is the supplement for?

Being above 1.85m

It means you go in the big boys carriage, not squashed up in the double-deckers :D

Oh Thank you!

When I travelled last summer, I just booked with my registration number unknown, so I didn't get charged the extra money for a campervan.

They never said anything or charged me any extra. Will be doing the same this year.

If anyone goes with Brittany ferries, as I tend to , as I live in the West Country, any Cali owner can go as my guest, and get 10% off.....no catch...just send me a privâte message, and I will give you my real name and club voyage number.....why not.

Great offer. Very generous. We have done this several times with a French family we are friends with and as you say no problem.

We stayed at a Band B in Normandy a few years back, and the woman gave use her number , which we used for a couple of years, till we got our own membership.
We now get 30% off, but have to pay the subscription....but it is no more expensive however many guests we have....So please enjoy.

We've yet to pick up our Cali (fingers still crossed for 1 March) but we are exitedly planning some trips. We are hoping to travel to both the continent and Ireland this year so I've been looking into ferry and Eurotunnel costs. I've noticed that there is a significant price differential between cars and motorhomes. The variation is between 20% for a short channel crossing to as much as 40% for a crossing from Liverpool to Dublin.

Most ferry companies make provision for a large car being upto about 2.35m tall and 6m long. A Cali easily fits within that. DFDS helpfully clarify the difference between a car and a minibus (upto 8 seats is a car) but not between a car and a camper.

In terms of dimensions we could legitimately book the Cali as a large car. I believe it is classified as a car on the registration document - is that correct? The saving on an Irish Sea crossing is hundreds of pounds but I do not want to risk turning up and being denied boarding or made to pay again.

So I'm looking to seasoned members out there for advice as to whether you do,are your Cali as a car or a motorhome. Are the ferry companies happy to transport Calis as large cars or do they insist we pay for them as motorhomes?

Main advantage of being in Brittany Ferries Club Voyage for me personally is a free cabin on afternoon sailing to France and again a free cabin on a France to UK morning sailing plus 10% of meals costing over £15.with up to 30% off the basic ferry crossing charge. First year charge is high with a joining fee on top of £70 annual cost.

The crossings I use are also the cheapest ones available which is why they offer a free cabin I guess.

Agree, though I choose the cheapest sailings, and always seem to miss the free things because of the timings,,,,,still well worth doing though
