Shake "rattle" and it's getting dull

Hi All,

Well it's one of those things you drive the bus and expect to hear a few little creeks and knocks.. but..

Wow how my 2016 T6 loves to rattle

So much so I've had to go to the extent of now pulling everything out that can be removed, unclipped and moved about....

I have discovered the source of one such rattle at the moment, the left hand kitchen cupboard has become loose at the bottom and floats about in the guide rails rattling to its self like some mad snake in the outback..

If anyone has any ideas on how to remove the cupboard door or indeed stop the rattle (the stereo won't go that loud I've checked) than please let me know?

Other rattles i am still hunting down are:

Drivers door

I think something is loose behind the door card as you hit a tiny bump and that door makes a very lovely noise

Windscreen

No matter the weather you get between 55 and 70 mph and it starts the windscreen rattle off

This one sounds like you got stuck behind a grittier on an icy road, it's a constant high speed tapping that seems to get slightly louder when I use the wipers.


It's been back to VW for them to look at other bits too:

Sliding door blind getting stuck and B pillar trim broken on the blind rail (still waiting for parts)

Large bottle holder under gear shift broken (been like it from day one and still waiting for the parts)

Problem with heater controls, the LED Disappears and reappears when moving the fan control (still waiting for a fix)

The rear cupboard above the back seats is very stiff to open (been told they are all like it?)

The hearted screen turns off like s condos after you turn it on? (They are still looking into that one)

The awning rattled as sponge kept moving but fixed that one my self thanks to some guys on here.

Any help at all guys thanks in advance

My commiseration's:

I have the dreaded windscreen rattle. With mine it's when the temperature drops to below 10 degrees and is also direction dependent. I can be going into the wind or have the crosswind less than 45% and it's worse. Turn in the opposite direction and it disappears. It's not got any worse since first detected and I have learnt to ignore it.

The rear overhead locker is technique. Push in and up before pulling out.

Are you sure it's the cupboard door rattling and not the table, which if not properly latched into the bottom pin can drive you nuts with the rattling.

Thanks for the reply.

My screen seems to not follow the rules, it dose this no matter the weather rain or shine strong and low winds.

I do have a suspicion it's coming from the plastics in the engine bay but driving with the bonnet open and a VW tech hanging on for dear life isn't an option I've explored.... yet.....

And defiantly now the table, I've removed both the double check, I then got the better half to drive while I was in the back until I found the noise (good way to spend a Sunday afternoon)

The table: When stowing it, as you slide it back,, place light pressure (pushing towards the fridge) on the lower half (seat base level). This helps to locate it on the lower pin which eliminates that rattle. It sounds complicated but it isn't, becomes second nature after a while.

No sorry, that's the problem when typing half asleep..

It's not the table it is however defiantly the door, i know this as I've removed both of the tables to be 100%

I found out last week it was my drivers door by opening it while driving (slowly on a less than buisey road) ......cured by greasing the door catch

Drivers Door rattle could be the awning if you have one. Wind out a few inches then close. Don't over tighten as the gearing is plastic.

Thank you, and yes have had an issue with the awning, but fixed that by replacing the sponge the rail arms but up too when closed.

But i defiantly have something behind the drives door card almost like the speaker is loose or maybe the door card it's self I've noticed this is secured differently to my old T5

Does anyone else find that their arm rests rattle when in the upright position? Mines a 7 seat Beach so i'v got four of the darned captains seats in there, and if all the armrests are in the up position (a requirement when bringing a muddy football team back from training) the arm rests rattle almost as much as the kids.

If anyone knows how to stop them rattling (the seats that is) i'd very very grateful. The kids are beyond hope....

I'm always twiddling my nob (excuse the puns) to stop them, didn't mention this one as it's become a game rather than an annoyance

1. I had (fixed this evening) a noise from the passenger side sounded either from below the seat or under/outside the car. Now my wife had a brainwave and wondered if it could be the mudflaps. Sure enough one side although bolted tight the flap move fore and aft. A couple of washer and it appears to have resolve it.

2.I wonder if the screen noise could be the circular blanking plate under the bonnet. Some have mentioned it on here before.

I have the T6 door card rattle too, T5 was ok, was also noticeable in another T6 I tested. Must be the 'driver alert' feature. Not the table in side door, I'll check awning and door catch but I've learned to live with it. I'm going to rifle through the spare parts bins at the factory visit to check what nuts and bolts they forgot to fit

Hi, sorry I'm late to the party.
My Cali had a windscreen rattle every time it went over 50mph. I took it to VW who removed and re-fitted 'a trim' now it happens when I go over 40mph!
It's going back to be 'fixed' again. When it does I'll ask what the trim is and let you know.
I can only think it's the plastic trim behind the wipers.

Incidentally, when I explained the problem the VW technician said occasionally seeds / nuts can fall through the vent slots in the trim and rattle up and down the bulkhead void.

Not just small seeds, my Cali had a few acorns and rose hips stashed there by some hoarding mice.

So I am getting the bus back on Monday.

I spent a good 20 minutes talking to one of the Techs over at Kettering VW yesterday going over what's been done and faults he found.

windscreen rattle: was exactly as Ted described above. The plastic trim that's under the wipers is finished off under the bonnet but is left floating in position, so when the wind hits this it creates a vibration that's louder the faster you travel.

Fix: The only real option is to pack this out underneath to stop the plastic hitting the body work, the Tech has used the same acoustic tape used behind all the number plates so it's very durable.

Sliding door blind: was sticking and not closing correctly

Fix: replace the runner clips that where faulty and lubed the runners

Large bottle holder: faulty clip

Fix: new part bottle holder installed

Heated Screen: turning off

Fix: user error, I was turning this on straight away once the vehicle had started, when these start you can hear a lot of clicking of relays and what not one of these is the windscreen heater really and this was cycling it's self wait like 10 seconds and it's all good.... oups...

Heater control LED: lights drop off when using this

Fix: User error again, that I had failed to notice is when the fan speed LEDs turned off the AUTO light comes on, this is a clever bit of kit. The system is programmed to operate in that way.. oups again....

Drivers door: loud rattle

Fix: Screws lose on speaker, removed and tightened with thread lock

Rear overheard locker: stiff to open

Fix: I'm getting the back right now, although it still seems odd

cupboard door faulty: rattling at the bottom.

Fix: door had come lose and runners at the bottom faulty, this has all now been repaired and works fine with no rattling (again some acoustic tape has been applied to help)

So all is well now and looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.

The little 1.4 Polo they have given me just isn't doing it for me

Commiserations on your rattling woes. Sounds like they're all fixed now though.

I may have been lucky but have not noticed any particular rattles. Certainly nothing louder than the saucepans rattling in the cupboard when we don't stack them properly - which is pure laziness on our part.

I have to admit the technician over the Kettering (i think his name is Paul) has been very patient with me and it was really good to actually spend the time with him to speak about the issue instead of him just reading off a job card.

So yep, like you I'm certainly looking forward to incorrectly stacking me pots and pans again

Good to know you've been getting good service at Kettering. I've been using and happy with Leicester so far but another option is always good.

I have just taken my 2014 van in to fix the rattles and creaks in the door post by the driver's seat before the warranty runs out. VW Breeze in Southampton said that "adjustments" such as this are only covered in the first 6 months of the warranty!
As a goodwill gesture they have spent 3 hours on it, but not made much difference. "You have to expect creaking and rattling as the structure is just plastic pushed together", apparently.

I might have just found the answer to my own question. It appears that after 6 months it is up to you to show the fault is inherent and was there at the time of purchase.

From the This is Money website.

"Under UK law, buyers in England and Wales can get a partial refund or full repair up to six years after the purchase was made (five years from discovery in Scotland). The refund should take into account how much use the customer has already had of a product. Ultimately, a county court would decide this.

However, the likelihood of getting such a refund is dramatically reduced after just six months. The reason is that for six months after the purchase, it is up to the retailer to show that a fault on an item is down to the actions or misuse of the buyer, rather than an inherent fault in the product.

After six months, the burden of proof switches to the buyer and it is they who must then show a fault is due to some inherent problem, something that can be almost impossible in all but the most straightforward cases."
