Eurotunnel prices

Good evening all

Does the price of Eurotunnel tickets change if booked well in advance or are they the same prices regardless of when you book them?

I have always booked well in advance but not sure if we will stay in the UK or go to Europe as we will stay in the UK if the weather is good.

We have 2 separate trips planned, Dublin to Holyhead ferries are already booked for 10 days in June and also 10 days at the start of September

Return crossings always seem to cost us around 200 to 220 when ever we book winter or summer.I always do it a month or so before ..
How does that compare with the price you pay???

I have a "frequent tunneller" ticket, 10 trips paid in advance, so not too well acquainted but last August when I needed to make a very short-notice trip to Belgium and my Tickets had run out I was horrified how much it cost me, at least three times more than what I normally pay.

It could have been the peak season, but it was a monday out, Wednesday back, so not normally the busiest days.

Last year I paid £80 each way.

This year it’s £80 over and £110 back in June

Normally I pay around £35 each way for my motorbike.

I wouldn’t do enough trips Jen to warrant a 10 multi trip ticket unfortunately.

DFDS (book via aFerry.co.uk) Dover-Dunkirk normally costs me about £127 return. Doesn’t appear to increase massively, closer to the date of departure.

I used to take the Chunnel, but don’t mind stretching the legs a bit on the ferry, and use it as a coffee stop on route. Whereas with the Chunnel it feels like you haven’t left the car/van all day.

Prices go up as more tickets sell, same as Ryannair etc. We have booked for the summer hols for £166 return, it's way better than channel ferries.

The above is for 2x adults and a dog. Think the dog charge is £10 each way, expensive due to checks required.

It also lets you specify the VW California as your exact vehicle, which avoids any “category” disputes.

I also added +1metre length to cover the tow bar mounted bike rack.

TBH I do prefer the tunnel as any experience has always been very efficient and to be fair I normally use the service late at night as I drive straight from Holyhead to Folkestone and straight on to Calais, then use an “Aire” to stop for some sleep.

The ferry is a lot cheaper so worth looking into alright.

Like Granny Jen, in fact following her advice on a earlier post, I too get frequent traveller ticket. I only used 8 of the 10 tickets, still cheaper. I also do the journey down to Calais and stay on the Aire.

We normally park up at Dunkirk beach-front the night before or after a late arrivial.... we located this spot using the park4night app, which we love.

An off peak return works out at £110 .... £44 per trip plus £11 high vehicle supplement.You don't need to make all ten trips to start breaking even.

Your experience is interesting. I wanted to book DFDS direct Dover to Dunkirk in late December for a trip to Bruges. However the online system wanted to charge me as though my vehicle was a motorhome. I couldn't get around the issue so I called DFDS. The call centre agent asked me whether I had cooking facilities on board and of course I said yes. She said because of this its classed the same as a motorhome. I remonstrated, explaining my vehicle is no bigger than a large SUV but it made no difference, they wouldn't reduce the price. I placed my business with P&O, which was considerably cheaper. It just added 20 or so miles to the journey. But I have just noticed your van is a Beach. Thats why its cheaper with DFDS for you. Same external measurement, different pricing structure. Crazy rules if you ask me.

Booked it around Christmas time. I book it as a car over 1.85m with bike/roof rack. Never enter the reg number and have no problems. Just had a quick look for summer times and a lot are showing at £78 per trip.

If you book via the aFerry website, Beach, SE/Ocean... Doesn't matter..... Just select VW California from the list, and you get car pricing.

The booking confirmation, shows the reg and make/model..... So, no disputes at check-in.

I used this route 4x times in 2017.... No issues, car rate each time....

At that rate frequent traveller would be cheaper on your third trip in the year. Mine works out at £55 each way for up to 5 return trips in the year.

I was only thinking that last night.
I use the tunnel for my motorbike trips to Europe, but wanted to do the Lake District in the Uk for 1 of the weeks so I’d only be using 2 return trips in total for the year.
All in all it works out the same.

Great saving to be had but for me there is already a ferry from Ireland and the small matter of the 400 mile trip from Holyhead to Folkestone so I’d never really get to use a multi trip.
If I lived in the UK though that would be an different matter.
