Looking to order T6.1, and don't know what Pro gives you over standard "Discover Media" to make it a worthwhile option.
Can any one help?

Thanks Welshgas, better info than I had found.

It seams that the T6.1 system is already out of date even before a T6.1 has been delivered, because it mentions the new Golf being available with a 3D 9.2 inch touchscreen as opposed to the 8 inch being fitted in the Cali.

It mentions the Pro having 3D mapping as opposed to 2D/2.5 any body had any experience of 3D mapping or the other options that justify the extra £666.

I am also about to order a T6.1 and I am struggling with what is extra with the "Pro". A smidgen of info here

There is also a 35 minute Youtube review of the T6.1 Caravelle, in English, where they cover the infotainment system.

I also wandered into our local VW car dealership to look at the Pro, but they were useless!

I went into the Watford VW Car Dealer, and they didn't have any vehicles fitted with a Pro system, which I found surprising. They said it was not an option being often chosen, which is why I'm hesitant to order it.

VW in St Albans have plenty of cars fitted with the Pro.

Whilst sitting in relative darkness watching a movie last night I noticed, on a couple of occasions, the touch screen ‘buttons’ momentarily flash on. No apparent problems with the van but just but wondered if anybody else had seen this? Roof was up and the only active systems at the time were Fridge and Aux Heater.

Mine does something like that - its less of a flash, more like the screen flickers less black if that makes sense. A bit like when the TV at home is switched on but not showing a picture. Only happens if the fridge is on.

Thanks @andyinluton , interesting.
Screen on mine stays black just a momentary flash of the ‘buttons’. I did wonder if it might be either the Fridge or Aux Heater kicking in causing a ‘spike’ ?
Not the sort of thing i’d notice normally.

I haven’t upgraded to the Pro as I can’t see the value in it, I could be wrong, but here’s my take, the standard unit has
  • Wireless CarPlay
  • Navigation displays in the Digital Dash
  • Physical control knob
  • Same speaker set up
Whilst the Pro version physically looks better I cant find anything that it doesn’t do that the Pro does.

Note I use Apple CarPlay 99.9% of the time so have no interest in the VW built in Sat Nav, which to me will be out of date before the Cali arrives.

The built in sat nav receives free updates, so shouldn't be out of date. Once you've signed up for We Connect it brings the traffic etc in. This allows the sat nav to be displayed on the digital dash, which I don't think Car Play can be.
I don't miss the physical knob. There is a permanent button for volume on the screen, and of course you have a button on the steering wheel.
The larger screen also benefits eg parking camera, and fills the dash, looking better integrated.
Minor details, none essential, and I'm not sure of other benefits yet (though VW list a few) but I'm glad to have it.

Its the bigger screen that makes the most difference especially when using CarPlay in a split screen mode, it just gives a much bigger area to show the maps in.
Ive not found the built in maps to be out of date.

If you have time would you mind taking a picture / video of the CarPlay split screen? Would be amazing to see it working on a California. I still have time to amend my order.

You can get map updates for newer systems via here:

I believe the maps are updated on a 6 month period. Can be done online via We Connect or download to computer and transfer. Guides are there for the various system models.

Sorry, I don’t mean the Maps being out of date. I mean the approach to mapping. I’d say Google & Waze are further ahead and update the way mapping works and features way more often than VW do.

However could be wrong, haven’t used VW maps for a few years. Seems likely evidence that between Google (Waze) & Apple they’d be pushing things forward faster than VW. I’ve been using CarPlay for years, I use Waze, great in traffic and displays my current speed + the speed limit. Sometimes the street view on Google maps is helpful too.

Waze via car play is the way forward for me. What’s the VW system like for rerouting you if there’s an accident a few miles up the road? Or warning you about a broken down lorry or lump of retread in the carriageway?

Waze was supposedly illegal in France but I think it’s ok now since they reworded the speed trap warnings to just say “police”

One downside to all screens is their tendency to attract fingerprints. I bought an Upscreen screen protector that was supposed to minimise them ("anti-fingerprint"), but doesn't in practice. I took it with me for Azuri to install when they PPF'd the van, as I'm cack-handed, and they said it was slightly oversized, despite being designed for a 6.1 pro nav. Annoying! Azuri kindly cut a mm off it to fit, but as it's glass it now has a slightly rough edge. For now I've left it fitted, but will replace it if I can find a better solution. Recommendations welcome.
I can't recommend these:

Just realised you mean the split screen on the single screen right. I thought you meant split between the main unit and the Digital Cockpit

We have the 9.2" screen and it gives a bit more detail / has more pixels on your nav-map and the 3d nav. We have a preordered vehicle, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't order it myself also because of the fingerprints..20211009_132450.jpg

One beauty of the split between the screen and the digital cockpit, using VW nav, is you can move away from the large map on the screen (to eg car play music) and the route remains on the dash.nav digital dash.jpg

Seems ok for re-routing & I've not found the live traffic to be wrong ie it shows the queues pretty accurately.

I use Waze, great in traffic and displays my current speed + the speed limit.
The Vw system shows current speed limit & adds an exclamation if you are over it. You get a huge digital number right in front of the driver showing how fast you are currently going!

How does Waze cope when there is no mobile signal?

They all suffer from fingerprints?
I'd welcome suggestions for screen protectors that minimise them...

Sometimes I like google maps in the centre for spotting beaches etc combined with VW maps showing the roads. At other times just bombing up & down the M6 I just want basic maps showing where the traffic is.
