Starting problems

Full battery spec.

That’s a new ignition switch just fitted. Started straight off even with pause for glow plug light to go off. But to be fair it started a couple of times earlier ok aswell. Only time will tell. The old switch looked ok to me, my local vw parts dealer said they sell loads of them but very rarely sell starter motors. . I’ll update if it starts again. Thanks

Thanks this is the battery I have fitted. Is this up to the job??

Thanks fir your advice and help. I now need to solve my emissions light which comes on for a couple of weeks then goes off for the same time again. Had a forced regen done two months back but still intermittently comes on and off. I’m having to top up my coolant maybe once a month, the van is used as a daily car. I read on another thread that the egr can leak coolant and the egr may be tge cause of the emissions light??? Have you any experience with this issue?? Thanks

Can't help on that one but worth a Google of the forum :)

The T4/5 Forum might be a better bet . They are a little more technical.

I purchased a 2009 cali 2 months ago 100 000 miles .Needed a new starter motor when picked up starts perfect now .No problems with coolant but have read if using coolant water pump is a prime suspect .Repair soon as don't drive advice I have read.Changed gates couplings and freewheel clutch bearings Front off van of not the best job but needed doing.Judder on power steering changed for recon pump someone put wrong fluid in flushed and better but not perfect. Many other small issues which slowly getting done.Still enjoying

Thanks. We are gradually getting through our problems. Two new leisure batteries, new fridge controller unit. Ignition switch, cables and pulley set on electric sliding door, forced regeneration which seems a waste as the emissions lamp comes on and off intermittently. Probably £1 k in so far and still more issues. I’m getting a pressure test done on the coolant system Friday I hope. I still think it’s a great van and making it good gives me piece of mind. Thanks

Hi just had a mechanic put his diagnostic kit on the van. Showing 57% clogged up on the dpf. The coolant he didn’t seem to be too concerned. No visible signs of leaking. He thinks a new dpf or a remap and doing away with dpf. Any advice would be great thanks

Three different things in there.
1. for the DPF, I would get a Carista and try its DPF cleaning feature. someone on here will confirm if the Carista will work with your T5. At £30 from amazon and 1 or 2 weeks of free usage - I think is worth it.
2. Remap - not sure why he thinks it will help. It will not help with the DPF clogging issue - will just make the driving a bit more pleasurable once remapped. If he mentioned remap as a method of cleaning the DPF - run away from him right now and get another opinion
3. Doing away with the DPF I think will result in an MOT failure. Again, not sure why the mechanic is suggesting this. I would get another opinion.

Have you tried with a new/alternate battery? (sorry, not been through all the thread updates).

Hi I fitted as new ignition switch and up till now tge starting issues is over. He mentioned that the dpf remains on there but he strips out the inside of it as well as a remap. I’m not clued up on the remap but he says I will get better fuel consumption and the engine won’t be getting clogged up as the dpf is no longer working. Thanks for your reply

1. It's immoral if not illegal at the moment.
2. Might fail the MOT, if not now possibly in the future.
3. It will void your insurance if they find out.
4. If you sell the vehicle without declaring the DPF delete, basically illegal.
5. In the real world a remap is unlikely to improve fuel efficiency without a significant change in driving style as well.

There are DPF cleaning services. Some are Mobile and come to you.
@WelshGas has the legal implications correct, getting tougher with focus on Global warming.
Try a Carista (uses a Smartphone App to display info) as it has an option to do a 'regen' not sure if applies to T5, should do. Just a case of running on the A90 with a steady 2,000 to 2,500rpm for up to a half hour. Carista App will show actual soot level as you drive. Goes down to 9 so a long way from your figure.
If nothing else you can see if the problem needs more doing to fix the soot build up.
Carista says 9 to 22 level normal.

I don’t think carrista works on the t5. Accortoding to theee website it starts on facelift models t5.1 onwards. Unless anyone out there can advise otherwise?? Thanks for your reply.

You could try @BFGs suggestion , but ultimately the DPF is a wear and tear item with an approximate life span of 120,000 miles, depending on the type of motoring according to VW.

If you don’t have BlueMotion , ie: Regenerative Braking and Stop/Start, then straight swap.
Quick update welshgas! Starting problem is back. I find it strange how the new ignition switch held it off for over a week.
think I’ll get the battery tested under load!
