Which electric car to buy?

Suspect each manufacturer will have a signature ‘jingle’ played at low speeds. Brian Eno is probably busy composing as we speak :)
So in London crosswalks say “Look right” to protect foreign pedestrians, but there is no regulation to require low speed EVs to project sound in order to protect locals???

In Spain EVs, including public transport (most of the local busses are electric) are required to have sound projection at low speeds (higher speed tire noise makes this redundant.) It usually sounds like something out of science fiction, entertaining and effective. I think it’s an EU rule, so you may not have it in the UK?
UK Government introduced that requirement from 1st July 2019.

Incorrect.

And being hit by one. Personal liability will likewise increase to cover claims from pedestrians and their families who are hit by these silent assassins.
I figured this had to be wrong, thanks for confirming.

Ours only make a noise when reversing. Sounds a like a spaceship so gets pedestrians attention!

Silent when going forward, but will brake if it detects someone / something in front of the car, or a red traffic light.

Incorrect according to WelshGas’s post #1,127 above.

Actually he’s correct, just checked & apparently it also make a sound when driving forwards below 20mph…but can’t say I have ever noticed it.

Info on this topic changes daily, lucky we have this forum to keep us up to date.

It would be amusing if EV owners could select or download their own slow forward and reverse tones like we did with mobile phone ring tones in the early naughties.

Central London would once again be a symphony of Vivaldi, ABBA and “Frankie say Relax”, with the odd default Nokia ring tone thrown in.

The AVAS rule, written by the EU, was implemented in 2019 when we were EU members so it’s in our legislation too. All ev cars manufactured from 2021 are required to have it on sun 20km/h.

When looking to purchase an ev don't forget to consider the increased tyre wear and the corresponding increased pollution caused by the micro rubber particles released into the environment.

Love this argument, 3+ tonnes of Cali is much better.

You might want to consider metallic paint also as mica comes from mines in India with child labour……

Loads of tread left on our EV. Still on 1st set with 17k miles on the clock. Even tyre wear all round.

Won’t need to worry about child labour soon. In fact any sort of labour welfare…. o_O

One of several interesting comments: "We don't know if battery powered vehicles will be the answer to climate change everyone assumes they are. Maybe hydrogen will emerge ......."

Hydrogen still requires a lot of energy to create, and also needs infrastructure to deliver , but existing ICE fuel stations / Tankers can be adapted.

Electric motor is simpler than a hydrogen engine, so requires less parts to build. Running costs are also cheaper, less parts to fail or be maintained. This upsets car manufacturers as they will lose money on the servicing side, as most software updates for EV’s are done at home using WIFI.

You can create your own electricity at home with ‘zero emission’ solar to offset your car running costs, and also reduce your household bills, so it’s not just about the car. ( Ok - building solar panels, home battery, wind farms etc creates emissions so not entirely zero emission.).
