I gather the new Ocean 6.1 doesn’t come with paddle shift on the steering wheel. I use them a lot on my current cars and wondered if it was possible to retrofit them to the Ocean….?

Hazzydayz do it for the T6 and no doubt will do for the T6.1, for £750+
Worth a call or check out the T6 Forum if you want to do it yourself.

Leighton Vans sell replacement carbon fibre/leather wheels with coloured stitching and paddle shifts. Works well on my Coast (which did not come with paddles).

If you do have LV fit a new steering wheel I would suggest clarifying their understanding on your original wheel. When I had mine changed they had the view they were keeping my old one; they strip them back and use them as a carcass to build the new carbon fibre/paddle shift version. I didn’t agree with their understanding and got mine back (I paid full price not some P/X deal).

How much do they charge..?

Like your colour of van….just the same as we ordered…

I recall that the price included fitting, but i might be wrong. Only took them 20 minutes. The paddles come with the new wheel, part of the package. Works the same as a factory fitted version, no issues or problems.

Dear all,

I picked up this old thread since I had an interest to look at the possibility of doing a retrofit of steering wheel-mounted gearshift levers onto my bog-standard 2021 California Ocean.

After contacting a couple of UK workshops who do such steering wheel mod's / exchanges, but ask upwards of £600-700, I looked into what's involved technically, found what I believe is a good place to source genuine OE parts, and so have decided to do the job myself.

Today I did a dry run of removing airbag module and MFSW bezel to check the exact spec of my own switch set so that I order the right parts, and the work is eminently do-able, if you are competent and very patient (getting the bezel off cleanly and undamaged is a long and nerve-wracking sweat, but absolutely is possible) !

If anyone is interested to do the same, then once my parts arrive and I've done the installation-proper, then I'll gladly start a new thread and write a comprehensive 'how-to' guide.

Meanwhile, here below are the parts I have ordered today - my wheel switch set unfortunately doesn't have pre-installed connectors for the paddles, so what initially looked like a total spend of €199 (for a replacement new bare wheel with paddles) increases by another €159 for the required set of paddle-compatible MF switches. Anyway, that's still 'only' ca. £320 all-in, which I think is not a bad deal.

Is it possible to retrofit for heated wheel?

On a quick look it would appear that Wibutec don't offer this option for the Transporter; sorry:

(edit: but of course it clearly is possible, since such a T6.1 wheel with a heated rim does exist)

Apart from reverse and drive I’ve never changed gear in my Ocean so the paddles won’t meet my needs, but a heated steering wheel…. Oh boy!!!!
Is this a question from my wife, I wonder, working under a nom de plume ?!

I’ll check on Wibutec’s website - probably . . .
Yes. See the T6 Forum

Look forward to the result, been researching this myself for a while.

Yes. See the T6 Forum

Thanks for this WG. The thread suggested that there’s a lack of power supply to feed the heating element in the steering wheel, so more components are required to be swapped out.

Gloves sound like an easier idea

It'll be ca. 3 weeks before I can share the whole process, and result: Wibutec don't ship to the UK, so I'm having the parts sent to a tame 'poste restante' address in Italy where I'm going for a business trip in early March, so will collect from there and hand-carry home to fit ! Just love a Brexit workaround !

I've just received deliveries from companies in the USA, Australia, Spain and Germany. Nothing to do with our relationship with the EU . Just the pathetic company who cannot complete a simple Customs Declaration.

A friend of mine, a keen Europhile as it happens, set up a very financially successful company in late 2020. Ironically his consultancy advises clients on those simple Customs Declarations for imports and exports to the EU.

He agrees with you that they’re very simple to fill in, right after the point you’ve worked out exactly which form and which sections of that form are relevant to your trading requirements.

Seeing as many companies cope with the changes maybe those companies that can't need a change of employee.

I’ve had flappy paddles on 2 of my Cali’s.

Love the idea of them, never used them once (except for testing)

Watching the heated steering retrofit with interest.

My parts arrived this morning at their staging post in Italy - collection is in 2 weeks!

Meanwhile, if anyone's curious as to why one would even want to retrofit their steering wheel with shift paddles - to be honest I wouldn’t have understood, unless I’d driven the vehicle before; after all, a California is for travelling in, rather than driving, surely ? . . . - read on.

It was after driving a paddle-equipped van we rented for a trip to the Hebrides in 2021, before buying our own vehicle afterwards (where paddles weren't an option as we bought a standard-spec. cancelled order) that I saw the attraction.

It’s not about being a boy racer, but just that it offers a driver better controllability with which to make smooth progress when grinding up and down mountain passes at constantly-varying speed. The ability, without moving right foot or hands, to quickly pop down or up a gear (direct from the wheel) to give more or less torque at the wheels, rather than prodding a mushy, unresponsive throttle, waiting for a lazy, heavy engine and turbo to spool up and deliver, by which time you need to bail out with a lurch because you received the result late and without finesse, so need quickly to stem the tidal wave.

Paddles serve as a neat and effective ‘digital torque controller’, with fine-enough steps to give the required effect, leaving the position of the right foot unchanged throughout. Yes, I know, I can pull the console shifter back and forth to do the same, ’Tiptronic’ style, but I’m long and lanky so that means constant ducking forward to reach the lever.

So, as I say, it’s less about driving, less still about sportiness, all about travelling comfortably and smoothly.

I expect to use this option only when crossing the above style of terrain.

Most won’t see any point in this (least of all my wife - ‘I like the wheel we have’), so do take it or leave it as just a statement of preference . . . if it does appeal, then great, and I’ll post the how-to guide; if it doesn’t, stroll on, you’re £320 to the good and saved yourself the bother of a courier trip to Italy !
